Founded in 1859 in Barbaresco, Gaja is one of Italy’s most important family wineries. Angelo Gaja, who joined in 1961 and took over in 1970, is widely regarded as Italy’s leading wine pioneer, reshaping modern Italian winemaking while elevating the potential of Nebbiolo. His innovations - vineyard replanting, temperature-controlled fermentation, small oak barriques, and the bold planting of Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay in Barbaresco - set new benchmarks for quality and style.

The Wine

While the estate remains headquartered in Barbaresco, Gaja now produces 18 wines from around 100 hectares, averaging 350,000 bottles a year across Piedmont and Tuscany, including Barbaresco, Barolo, Montalcino and Bolgheri. Expansion into Tuscany began with Pieve Santa Restituta in Montalcino (1994) and Ca’Marcanda in Bolgheri (1995). Gaja’s wines are crafted as cru expressions, defined by elegance, concentration and a strong sense of place — a lasting testament to Angelo Gaja’s influence on Italian wine.
