The 2023 white wines from Delaunay are beautifully drinkable, offering an easy elegance. Unlike the larger, richer 2022 vintage, 2023 returns to a classic size with a well-balanced acidity, not too high or low. This vintage avoided the intense heat of 2020 and 2022, allowing for a more natural acidity that didn’t degrade during ripening. With record-high yields in both red and white, the wines display a lighter but more elegant profile compared to the previous year's concentration. In particular, the whites show an impressive balance of fresh acidity and racy minerality, with no chaptalisation needed.
"A serious wine still developing, with 1/3 new oak. It shows good fruit, white flower aromas, and creamy layers, with citrus and spice hints. This wine will continue to evolve, and its complexity and potential are clear."
Our note
Overall, the 2023 vintage is a welcome surprise, offering a balance of power and elegance. With a focus on terroir expression, the wines show great ageing potential and freshness, with no over-ripeness or dilution. The whites are bright, fresh, and pure, while the reds show refinement and elegance, with a good structure for future ageing. While some of the wines are still developing, there is much to look forward to in the coming years.
What the critics say:
"Honeyed, textured nose, which smells as if this might have been made quite oxidatively with low sulphite additions – which is not to say that it isn't clean or beautifully balanced; it is. Masses of substance and matter. Honey and chamomile, wintergreen herbal, yellow-lentil earthiness and layers and layers of ripe citrus bringing bitterness, fragrance, whetstone acidity and piercing freshness. Electric energy, coiled power. Lots of stony dustiness, tightly ruched along the central spine. A crunch of white-marble minerality on the finish."
"Three barrels, one new, from En Charlemagne. A tiny touch of coconut but otherwise the oak is well integrated. There is plenty of wine here, full bodied rather than aggressively mineral. Grand Cru texture with weight at the back of the palate. Good length, with some tension, still a baby but promising with the youthful bitters. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted Nov 2024 ****"
