Founded in 1994 by David Powell, Torbreck is all about honouring the old vines and rich winemaking heritage of the Barossa Valley. The name itself comes from a forest in Scotland where Powell once worked, reflecting the estate’s deep connection to tradition, craftsmanship, and respect for the land. What sets Torbreck apart is its access to some of the oldest and most precious vineyards in the Southern Hemisphere, with gnarly old Shiraz, Grenache, and Mataro vines, many over 100–150 years old.
 
Their winemaking style is inspired by the great Rhône houses, combining Barossa opulence with fine structure and purity of fruit. In 2017 winemaker Ian Hongell took on the role as Chief Winemaker overseeing all production and viticulture. Working closely with his team he is the custodian of numerous plots of old vines amongst Torbreck’s five estates running up the western ridge of the Valley.

Furthermore, Torbreck works in collaboration with more than thirty Barossa families who own a patchwork of vineyards that supply a wide cross section of old vines that make up many of the cuvées. From the vibrant, juicy Woodcutter’s Shiraz to the “monumental”, Forebear, Laird and RunRig - the former two often getting compared to top Hermitage - these are wines that offer immediate pleasure and serious cellaring potential.
