One of the real joys of this job is sniffing out Burgundy’s rising stars, and from the first tasting with Domaine Éric Boigelot with the new generation, Charles, we knew that we were onto something special. The Boigelot family owns some of the best plots in the Côte de Beaune, and for years some of their fruit has gone to none other than Coche Dury. The connection goes deeper - Charles himself spent two years cutting his teeth at Coche, bringing back more than a portion of that magic to his own wines.
The roots of Domaine Éric Boigelot trace back to the early 20th century when Éric Boigelot's great-grandfather established a 2-hectare wine estate in the village of Monthélie. Over time, Jacques Boigelot, Éric's grandfather, expanded the domain to cover 7 hectares across Meursault, Monthélie, Volnay, and Pommard. Éric inherited his family's winemaking knowledge and launched his own 3.5-hectare estate in Monthélie in 1990. In 1998, the estate relocated to the centre of Meursault.
Today, 9 hectares of vineyards are planted with Aligoté, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir across these four villages. Situated in the heart of Burgundy, Domaine Éric Boigelot benefits from Meursault's renowned wine-producing region. This village is particularly celebrated for its Chardonnay production, with diverse soils, including limestone and marl, contributing to the character of its wines.
William Kelley recently made his first visit—marking a milestone in The Wine Advocate’s coverage—and came away impressed. He highlighted the whites as “already accomplished,” with particular praise for the concentrated Caillerets. Given Charles’s youth and talent, Kelley concluded, “this is very much an address to watch.”
The Wine
Domaine Éric Boigelot's vineyards are strategically placed in Meursault, allowing the Chardonnay grape to flourish in soils that bestow unique qualities upon the wines. The winemaking at Domaine Éric Boigelot is characterised by meticulous attention to detail, from vineyard management to grape harvesting and the crafting of the wines themselves.
The estate offers a range of wines, including reds, whites, and rosés, each expressing the essence of Meursault's terroir. The Boigelot family places a strong emphasis on environmental sustainability, practicing eco-friendly viticulture to preserve their vineyards' long-term health.
