Pierre Meurgey is a rising star in Burgundy, blending tradition with modern techniques to craft precise and terroir-driven wines. His focus is on showcasing the nuanced characteristics of each appellation, from the Mâconnais to the Côte de Beaune.
"Old vines (60-90 years) from four plots contribute creaminess and a broad mid-palate. Juicy with hints of spiciness and subtle oak, this wine has excellent balance and length."
Our note
The 2023 vintage was particularly noteworthy, beginning with uncertainty due to a sudden heatwave in early September. Thanks to early harvesting, Pierre achieved balanced ripeness and avoided overripeness, producing wines with finesse, vibrant fruit, and excellent ageing potential. Both reds and whites are approachable young yet structured.
What the critics say:
"From 60- to 90-year-old vines in various parcels around the village of Pouilly, the 2023 Pouilly-Fuissé Vieilles Vignes is fermented in 228-liter barrels and 10% new oak. It has a pretty bouquet featuring hints of orchard fruit, peach skin and apricot once again blossoming in the glass. The palate is well balanced and more concentrated compared to the 2022, with a slightly resinous texture and plenty of phenolics toward the finish. Give this a year in bottle."
"The usual sources within the boundaries of Pouilly. All in 228 litre barrels with minimal new (1 out of 16). A fullish yellow with a softly scented bouquet, a balanced take on summer sunshine. Additional weight on the palate, a mix of white orchard fruit with yellow plums, a suggestion of sucrosity tempered by a more mineral aftertaste. Tasted Oct 2024."
