Pierre Meurgey is a rising star in Burgundy, blending tradition with modern techniques to craft precise and terroir-driven wines. His focus is on showcasing the nuanced characteristics of each appellation, from the Mâconnais to the Côte de Beaune.
"From a cooler site with clay-limestone soils, this wine has exotic pineapple fruit, good minerality, and bright acidity. Fermented with no new oak, it is fresh and elegant."
Our note
The 2023 vintage was particularly noteworthy, beginning with uncertainty due to a sudden heatwave in early September. Thanks to early harvesting, Pierre achieved balanced ripeness and avoided overripeness, producing wines with finesse, vibrant fruit, and excellent ageing potential. Both reds and whites are approachable young yet structured.
What the critics say:
"Vinified in Beaune, racked to tank, sulphur not yet adjusted, probably for bottling in December. One 350 litre two-year-old barrel and two normal barrels of a similar age. A primrose colour, with a nose of greater precision than the village wine. A few tendrils of honeysuckle weave around a base of exuberant white fruit, the finish is long and sound, generous bit not at all flabby. Pierre will adjust SO2 and CO2 before bottling. Tasted Oct 2024 ****"
"The 2023 Pouilly-Fuissé Les Boutières 1er Cru, from vines planted north-to-south, fermented in 350-liter barrels with no new oak in a reductive environment. Meurgey mentioned that there were not a lot of lees in 2023. This was racked three weeks before my visit. It has an attractive bouquet with hints of red apple, lime, vanilla and greengage opening nicely with aeration. The palate is well balanced, with a dash of white pepper on the entry. It has fine acidity, a touch of lemongrass, good weight and a long finish. This should turn into a very fine Les Boutières."
