The 2023 growing season at Taupenot Merme began with a mild winter, followed by moderate spring and summer temperatures, and avoided extreme heat spikes. Early budbreak in April, mid-blossom in June, and veraison by late July led to a harvest from September 11-25, following a cooler, rainy spell in late August. Despite a season marked by an overall water deficit, careful organic management and two green harvests in July produced a balanced crop.
"Dark fruit with smoke, cinnamon, and garrigue. Three-dimensional, fleshy, and full-bodied."
Our note
The 2023 wines show moderate acidity with alcohol levels ranging from 12.3-13.6%, and phenolic ripeness reached across each cuvée. Reflecting a restrained, terroir-driven vintage, these wines lean towards elegance and subtle expression, rather than overt power.
Optimal drinking window: 2026 - 2040
What the critics say:
"Cask sample. Mid ruby. Mature red cherry and cassis on the darker nose than the Combe d'Orveau just tasted. Rich and intense with good concentration. Moderate, fresh, crisp acidity and a finish dusted with pepper and spice. Some tannin on the finish."
"The premier cru La Riotte from Taupenot-Merme boasts mulberry fruit aromas with hints of spice and violets. The structure is firm and tannic, more muscular but less refined than some in this cellar. The grapes come from a 0.56 hectare parcel with similar soil to what is found in Mazoyères, with just 40–50 cm of clay and then directly into Comblanchien and Premeaux limestone. This wine will open in three to five years and hold for another 20."
