The 2023 growing season at Taupenot Merme began with a mild winter, followed by moderate spring and summer temperatures, and avoided extreme heat spikes. Early budbreak in April, mid-blossom in June, and veraison by late July led to a harvest from September 11-25, following a cooler, rainy spell in late August. Despite a season marked by an overall water deficit, careful organic management and two green harvests in July produced a balanced crop.
"Floral, with notes of autumn hedgerow berries and spice. High-energy palate with dark fruit, rusticity, brine, and spice."
Our note
The 2023 wines show moderate acidity with alcohol levels ranging from 12.3-13.6%, and phenolic ripeness reached across each cuvée. Reflecting a restrained, terroir-driven vintage, these wines lean towards elegance and subtle expression, rather than overt power.
Optimal drinking window: 2027 - 2047
What the critics say:
"The 2023 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru has a delectable bouquet, complex and quite mercurial in the glass with a melange of red and black fruit, melted tar and light tobacco scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, silky-smooth with well-judged acidity. Very harmonious with fine "shoulders" on the finish, this is a worthy follow-up to the 2022."
"Cask sample. Mid-pale ruby. Mid weight with fragrant, floral fruit. Concentrated, sweet red cherry and raspberry, but high-toned with fine, crisp acidity. Few tannins to speak of. Evidently serious but just a little closed today."
"The Mazoyères of Taupenot-Merme has a darker cast of fruit than the Charmes, with aromas of mulberry and black plum, with almost a brambly, lightly rustic edge to it. The texture is not as bright as the Charmes, but it is more tannic and powerful; Romain Taupenot compares it to the difference between the premiers crus La Riotte and Combe d’Orveau. The grapes for this classic Mazoyères are from the domaine holding of 0.85ha near the southern end of the vineyard."
