Conti Marone Cinzano has launched in Montalcino with a bold new approach to this historical region.  A 10th-generation producer from one of Italy’s most storied wine dynasties, Santiago’s family has owned Col d’Orcia since 1973 and Argiano until 2013.

Lot.1 “1 vintage, 1 vineyard, 1 barrel, 1 wine” is a unique and highly unorthodox Brunello project:  Each year, he and renowned oenologist Dr. Donato Lanati (known for his work with Giacomo Conterno and Giuseppe Mascarello), identify a single plot to represent the vintage, selected from the family’s 108-hectare estate and more recently planted vineyards in the south of Montalcino, which are certified organic and farmed with biodynamic practices.

The vineyard is chosen based on its performance across the growing season, assessing phenolic maturity, quality of tannins and development of aromatic compounds.  This approach responds directly to the challenges of climate change and evolving tastes,  yielding bright, energetic wines, with softer tannins that speak to a new generation of Brunello lovers.

What the critics say:

98/100Othmar Kiem & Simon Staffler, Falstaff

"Bright, luminous ruby red colour with a shiny core. Pithy nose of rich cherry, cold smoke, leather, reminiscent of blood orange, cinchona bark and a hint of rosemary, with fine earthy tones and cranberries on the finish. On the palate, beautifully texture, full-bodied, with creamy, fine-meshed tannins, opens heartily, spans a wide arc, lingers for a very long time."

96/100Eric Guido, Vinous

"The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Lot 1 wafts up with a dramatic perfume that blends bright cherries, dried flowers, lavender and sage, all complicated by hints of rosemary. Despite its depth and power, this is wickedly fresh. Riveting acidity offsets soothing soft textures as ripe red berry fruits give way to blood orange and spice. The 2019 finishes long, potent and gently tannic with a sweet, silky blend of tart cranberry, crisp mineral tones and inner rose. This is the first vintage of Lot 1, and the potential is very high."

OUR GROWERS

Conti Marone Cinzano

Conti Marone Cinzano is rooted in a long Italian family history of viticulture and spirits that dates back to the 16th century. The project is led by Santiago Marone Cinzano, part of the tenth generation of a family once synonymous with the famed Cinzano vermouth brand.

After decades of growing Sangiovese at estates such as Col d’Orcia and Argiano, Santiago launched Conti Marone Cinzano to bring the family name back to wine and to explore a site‑selection approach to Brunello di Montalcino.
