The 2023 vintage at Domaine Henri Magnien stands out as a rare combination of exceptional quality and abundant yields, a balance seldom achieved in Burgundy. Meticulous grape selection during harvest ensured that only the finest fruit was used. Benefiting from a favourable flowering period, the vines produced well-formed bunches with a notable number of berries. The resulting wines are defined by their harmony: soft tannins, vibrant acidity, and a well-integrated richness.
"Displaying a deep ruby colour, this Grand Cru combines bright red cherry and raspberry aromas with floral notes of violet. On the palate, bright acidity and fine tannins create an elegant framework, leading to a beautifully extended finish."
Our note
This vintage displays a marked shift toward dark red fruit and spiced profiles compared to 2022, with enhanced freshness and balance. Achieving perfect ripeness was crucial, as the domaine opted for destemming all fruit, avoiding the use of whole bunches. The wines, crafted entirely from the Magnien clone of Pinot Noir developed in 1850, exhibit a clear expression of terroir alongside their refined structure and vitality.
What the critics say:
"The 2023 Corton Les Grandes Lolières Grand Cru, matured in 75% new oak, has quite a backward nose despite rigorous aeration. Still, I admire its precision and mineralité that only comes forth after a couple of minutes in the glass. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity threaded through the mineral-rich red fruit. It has gentle grip and a precise, poised finish that fans out. This is a superb Corton from Magnien that surpasses the previous vintage. "
"Moderate wood frames ripe aromas of poached plum with additional nuances of forest floor, spice and a floral top note. The succulent, even seductive, yet powerful larger-bodied flavors coat the palate with sappy dry extract that also serves to buffer the firm tannic spine shaping the long and nicely complex finale where the only nit is a touch of warmth."
