"Smoky bacon and violet aromatics lead into a core of dark berries. Savoury, structured and characterful, with real presence."
Stewart Pryce, Honest Grapes Wine Club Manager
Always a pleasure to visit this Vosne-Romanée stalwart, whose holdings remain the closest in spirit and geography to the original Gros family estate, founded in 1830. Today the domaine spans 23 hectares, including the Clos des Réas, the only Premier Cru monopole in Vosne. All wines are fully destemmed, giving a clear through-line of purity, density and finely polished tannins across the range. Since 2022, the domaine has taken full control of its Grand Cru parcels, with significant replanting using massale selection and increased vine density.
Yields in 2024 were sharply reduced, contributing to the concentration and intensity seen throughout the reds.
What the critics say:
"Here the wood is no longer subtle though it's not so prominent that it overshadows the more subtly spiced aromas of various red berries, newly turned earth and a suggestion of old leather. Once again, the sleek and beautifully detailed flavors are not particularly dense, though to be clear they are by no means dilute, while delivering excellent length on the solidly complex and ever-so-mildly warm finale where the wood resurfaces."
"The 2024 Clos de Vougeot le Grand Maupertui Grand Cru has a fragrant, perfumed bouquet with rose petal-infused red cherry and strawberry fruit, all delivered with fine definition. The palate is medium-bodied with a veneer of oak on the entry that will need time to be subsumed. Fine weight, quite spicy towards the finish, this deserves a couple of years in bottle but it should come good once it coheres."
