The 2023 growing season at Taupenot Merme began with a mild winter, followed by moderate spring and summer temperatures, and avoided extreme heat spikes. Early budbreak in April, mid-blossom in June, and veraison by late July led to a harvest from September 11-25, following a cooler, rainy spell in late August. Despite a season marked by an overall water deficit, careful organic management and two green harvests in July produced a balanced crop.
The 2023 wines show moderate acidity with alcohol levels ranging from 12.3-13.6%, and phenolic ripeness reached across each cuvée. Reflecting a restrained, terroir-driven vintage, these wines lean towards elegance and subtle expression, rather than overt power.
Drinking window: 2030 - 2050
What the critics say:
"Cask sample. Mid ruby. Lofty, intense nose of cherry and cassis, with pepper, incense, spice and an exotic balsamic note. Very complex, extremely rich and concentrated. The fine acidity and the seamless tannins are just buried in the immense depth of the fruit. Balance, length, intensity, concentration and complexity, this has it all. A humdinger. It is a pity there is so little of it."
"The 2023 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru comprises around 240 bottles this year. It has a very pure bouquet, very delineated and harmonious with raspberry and wild strawberry scents. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet entry, sorbet-fresh with candied orange peel infusing the red berry fruit toward the refined and persistent finish. Super delicious ... but as always, super rare."
"Taupenot-Merme farms a single ouvrée of the Clos des Lambrays that was part of the garden behind winery in the lieu-dit Meix Sentier until the domaine realised it was classed as grand cru. Although it is difficult to vinify such a small quantity, they have turned in a result of great elegance and finesse, with ripe pomegranate and cherry fruit, supple texture and an admirable finish. This should open in three to five years and will continue to age for a further 10 to 20."
