Edouard Delaunay's 2023 reds are more refined, with less power than the previous years, offering more elegance and poise. The acidity is well-integrated, and the tannins are fine and soft, especially in the wines from the southern parts of Nuits-Saint-Georges (NSG), which do not include any whole bunches. The reds from 2023 show great potential for ageing, with enough structure to develop further while maintaining a fresh, layered character.
Overall, the 2023 vintage is a welcome surprise, offering a balance of power and elegance. With a focus on terroir expression, the wines show great ageing potential and freshness, with no over-ripeness or dilution. The whites are bright, fresh, and pure, while the reds show refinement and elegance, with a good structure for future ageing. While some of the wines are still developing, there is much to look forward to in the coming years.
What the critics say:
"Anise, and something that makes me think of game pie. Juniper? Dense; a tight-mesh matrix of dried herbs, dark wild-berry fruit. Broody with glimmers of sweet tendresse. Chiffon layers, tree-bark layers, succulent-fruit layers. Pretty exciting already. Scandalous, I know, but I'd want to drink it now. Straight from the barrel."
"Three barrels, one from Mazoyères, picked and vinified together with one third whole bunch. This started out in two new barrels, one of which has been racked to older. A rich deep purple, with a sensual dark strawberry fruit, quite Charmes like. The oak adds a touch of cream but this is very juicy, fully ripe fruit, a seductive wine if less weighty than the Clos Vougeot. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted Nov 2024 ****"
