Anne and Hervé Sigaut kindly postponed relaxing in to the weekend to host Nathan and me for a tasting at 6.30pm on a Friday. And we are very glad they did.

Anne was the first to harvest in the village on 23rd August (and only in the morning as it was too hot by lunch time to be anywhere other than sipping iced drinks in the shade) which has led to a well-delineated, elegantly perfumed, sweet pastille-fruited set of delicious wines. From the village wine right up to the senior crus, the domaine has managed to capture Chambolle’s signature florality and sensuousness, and in 2020 there is an extra layer of hedonic, plush and suavely ripe red fruits (and a touch of black fruits too).

The grapes are biodynamically farmed, 100% destemmed, and the wines unfiltered and unfined.

Currently showing its primary fruit character with vibrant raspberry and floral notes taking centre stage. Over the next 2-3 years, these will begin to integrate and develop secondary complexity, with earthy and spice notes emerging. The wine should reach full maturity between 2028-2032, when fruit, earth, and mineral elements achieve perfect harmony. Given the vintage's concentration and good acidity, it will hold well until 2035, gradually developing tertiary aromatics of leather, game, and forest floor. The plush texture will soften further but retain its essential elegance throughout its drinking window.

What the critics say:

88-91/100 Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy

"From four plots, 10% new wood. Rich purple, perfumed rich raspberry fruit, fairly exotic. Pretty punchy but just in bounds, fresh deep raspberry, with some good acidity. Medium deep length. Tasted: December 2021"

Tasting Notes

AppearanceRich purple with excellent depth and clarity in the glass.

NosePerfumed and exotic with rich raspberry fruit taking centre stage. There's a sweet pastille quality alongside Chambolle's signature florality. The early harvest has preserved remarkable freshness despite the warmth of the vintage.

PalatePunchy and ripe with deep raspberry flavours supported by good acidity. The texture is plush and suavely ripe, with an extra layer of hedonic red fruits and subtle black fruit notes. Unfiltered and unfined, this shows real substance whilst maintaining elegance.

FinishMedium to deep length with fresh raspberry persistence and a mineral backbone.

Overall impressionA beautifully balanced village Chambolle that captures both the vintage's generosity and the appellation's signature grace.

Food Pairings

In Burgundy, this village Chambolle would traditionally accompany coq au vin made with the same wine, or perhaps a rabbit stew with herbs de Provence. Local chefs might pair it with duck breast served with a cherry gastrique, taking advantage of the wine's fruit-forward character. Époisses cheese, made locally in the Côte d'Or, provides a classic regional match, as would a simple roast chicken with tarragon. The wine's elegance also suits wild mushroom dishes, particularly cèpes sautéed in butter with garlic and parsley.

FAQs

What does this wine taste like?

Rich and perfumed with ripe raspberry fruit, floral aromatics, and a plush texture that captures Chambolle-Musigny's signature elegance with extra generosity from the warm 2020 vintage.

When should I drink this wine?

Delicious now for its primary fruit character, but will reward patience until 2035 as it develops greater complexity and integration.

What food pairs well with this wine?

Duck breast, roast chicken, rabbit stew, and wild mushroom dishes all complement its elegant fruit character, whilst local Burgundian cheeses like Époisses make classic regional pairings.

How should I serve this wine?

Serve at 16-17°C in Burgundy bowls, with optional light decanting for 30-45 minutes to help the wine express its full aromatic potential.

Is this wine worth cellaring?

Absolutely - whilst approachable now, this has the structure and concentration to reward 10-15 years of patient cellaring, developing complexity whilst retaining its essential elegance.

How does this compare to grand cru Chambolle-Musigny?

This village wine offers an accessible introduction to Chambolle's style with the same perfumed elegance and silky texture, just with less concentration and ageing potential than the grand crus Musigny and Bonnes-Mares.

OUR GROWERS

Domaine Anne et Hervé Sigaut

We were aware that we had stumbled upon something truly special when we introduced Anne and Hervé Sigaut to our collection, after having struggled to find a Chambolle-Musigny specialist that really excites us.

The grapes are biodynamically farmed, following the holistic principles that treat the vineyard as a living ecosystem and work with lunar and cosmic cycles to determine farming practices.
