Optimal drinking window: Now - 2032
Whilst many Chianti estates were adopting a more international style of winemaking in the ‘80s and 90s, Baron Alessandro de Renzis preferred to maintain a more traditional approach, eschewing barriques and aggressive extractions. The Castello retains the region’s last remaining ‘vinsantaia’ (traditional vin santo cellars).
Leone Rosso is a delicious baby SuperTuscan, accessible both in drinkability and price. This is a little softer, plusher and more internationally-styled than most of the estate's other labels, with a blend of 30% each of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, and 10% Ancelotta, a dark-hued variety from Emilia-Romagna, that gives intense colour and ripe tannins.
Dangerously drinkable and very versatile this is super choice for fuelling summer barbecues and summer parties.
This wine is at its peak drinking window now, showing vibrant primary fruit and soft, integrated tannins. Over the next 2-3 years, the fruit will remain dominant whilst developing subtle earthy undertones typical of Tuscan reds. The international varieties will integrate further, creating more harmony between components. After 2030, the wine may begin to lose its fresh fruit character, though it will remain pleasant for casual drinking.
Tasting Notes
AppearanceDeep ruby red with purple highlights, courtesy of the Ancelotta.
NoseRipe blackberry and plum dominate, with gentle herbal touches and a whisper of Mediterranean scrub. There's none of the oak-driven intensity you might expect from a Super Tuscan – this is all about fruit purity. A subtle peppery note from the Malbec adds interest.
PalateSoft and immediately appealing, with the Merlot providing a plush core of dark berry fruit. The Cabernet Sauvignon adds structure without heaviness, whilst the Ancelotta contributes gentle tannins and colour depth. The balance feels natural rather than constructed, with good acidity keeping everything fresh.
FinishMedium length with lingering dark fruit and a gentle spice that invites another sip.
Overall impressionA Super Tuscan that prioritises charm over power – dangerously easy to drink.
Food Pairings
In Tuscany, this style of wine would accompany grilled meats like bistecca alla fiorentina, the region's famous T-bone steak cooked over chestnut wood. Wild boar ragu with pappardelle would be another natural pairing, as would aged pecorino cheese with honey and walnuts. During summer, locals might enjoy it with porchetta sandwiches or herb-crusted lamb from the hillsides. The wine's approachable style also suits rustic dishes like ribollita, the hearty bread and vegetable soup that defines Tuscan comfort food.
We think this wine would go well with
Serve at 16-18°C to showcase the fruit whilst maintaining structure. No need to decant as this wine is designed for immediate enjoyment, though a brief opening 30 minutes before serving will help it express itself fully. Use medium-sized Bordeaux glasses to concentrate the aromatics without overwhelming the approachable character.
The vineyards benefit from Tuscany's classic Mediterranean climate with warm days and cool nights. The soils combine clay and limestone typical of the region, providing good drainage whilst retaining enough moisture for consistent ripening. This terroir allows for the successful cultivation of both traditional Tuscan varieties and international grapes like Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
As a SuperTuscan blend, Leone Rosso falls under the IGT Toscana classification, allowing for creative freedom beyond traditional Chianti regulations. This designation permits the use of international varieties like Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon alongside indigenous grapes. SuperTuscans emerged in the 1970s as rebellious expressions that often outshone their classified neighbours, proving that innovation could coexist with Tuscan terroir.
