Castello Sonnino in Montespertoli is the home of the venerable de Renzis family, whose notable ancestors include Italian Prime Minister Sidney Sonnino and whose study contains a section of the original Italian flag. Whilst many Chianti estates were adopting a more international style of winemaking in the ‘80s and 90s, Baron Alessandro de Renzis preferred to maintain a more traditional approach, eschewing barriques and aggressive extractions. The Castello retains the region’s last remaining ‘vinsantaia’ (traditional vin santo cellars).
After his untimely passing in 2021 (of COVID), Alessandro’s children Leone and Virginia, chose to leave their successful careers and join their mother, Baroness Caterina, to take on the running on the estate. Leone has a bold vision for elevating the reputation of Montespertoli’s wines, and the castle, chosen as one of “The Seven Gucci Places”, remains a popular destination for visitors, offering authentic hospitality in a beautiful setting.
The wines emphasise floral perfume, bright fruits and crunchy acidity.
