Here is a real treat: the latest releases from Domaine Robert Ampeau – with vintages spanning 1995-2003. Yes, these are the latest releases!
Prices are analogous to auction level given the remarkable aging program. As The Wine Advocate’s William Kelley says, “Ampeau’s old wines can be terrific”; it's a style that will appeal to lovers of proper old school Burgundy, and it's really not a surprise to learn that Ampeau wines are to be found in the cellars of DRC's Aubert de Villaine, Mme Lalou Bize-Leroy, and Dominique Lafon.
Michel Ampeau retired after making more than 35 vintages at the family domaine created by his grandfather, covering many of the finest climats of the Côte de Beaune and pursuing a policy of only selling his wines when mature. As a result he has one of the finest collections of back vintages in the whole of Burgundy. We have been enthusiastically offering these since 2024, and Club Members are always singing the praises of these wines. The style is one of lean, intellectual, harmonious wines where the fruit is complemented by crisp acidity and/or firm but ripe tannins. They are built to age and are fantastic partners for food.
As these wines have remained unmoved in the cold cellars at Ampeau since bottling, the conditions for slow, undisturbed maturation are perfect, with even the Volnay Santenots, over thirty years' old, showing impressive vivacity and freshness alongside the obvious mature fruit character.
These two reds are available to purchase online, although we do have some whites available too if interested (the domaine requires that two cases of red are ordered alongside every case of white). These are rare gems, that despite their maturity continue to show a vivacity and succulence that all Burg lovers should thrill to have on their tables... and for a great price!
