"The wines are exquisite, and each of the various Marienburg parcels is different: they shimmer aromatically, are alluring and profound, intense yet streamlined. Truly one of the Mosel’s best."
Anne Krebiehl, Vinous
The name Vom Blauen Schiefer literally means “from the blue slate,” referring to the harder, darker slate formation found especially around Clemens Busch's Fahrlay site. This soil forces vines to dig deeply for nutrients and water, contributing pronounced minerality and tension to the wine’s profile.
The 2024 Mosel vintage was marked by a challenging season and low yields, but the quality is high. The wines are fresh and precise, with bright acidity and moderate alcohol.
Clemens and his wife Rita are a humble yet hugely respected duo, having built a cult following over the past 30 years for their incredibly precise, richly textured, and terroir-driven wines. Produced biodynamically and organically since 1984, they are a compelling choice for Riesling enthusiasts who appreciate a mineral-driven profile.
What the critics say:
"The 2024 Riesling vom Blauen Schiefer was picked in the Fahrlay and made up of the pre-harvested fruit of the site. Smoky slate and reduction blend on the nose. Lemon only comes through on the second sniff. The palate puts all these notions into liquid format: stony slate, supple lemon and linearity. It is beautifully bright. The long, zesty finish shows how deep this sinks into stone. (Bone-dry)"
"The 2024er Riesling vom blauen Schiefer, as it is referred to on the main part of the label, comes from blue-slate sectors in the classic steep part of the classic steep parts of the Marienburg. It offers a rather backward nose made of gooseberry, whipped cream, white flowers, aniseed herbs, and smoke. The wine is still subtly sharp and tart on the palate, where a zesty side adds cut to the vibrant flavors of fruits and spices. The finish is focused, precise, and quite long. This beautiful dry wine has quite some upside potential as it develops its flavors over the coming years."
