This wine is beautifully generous, with inviting aromas of violets—a classic hallmark of Volnay—alongside vibrant red berries. The palate is silky and expressive, with refined yet firm tannins adding structure. Whether enjoyed in its youth or after a decade of aging, this wine is sure to impress at any stage.

The wines from Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard have a clear purity and minerality as well as a lovely weight and richness of fruit. The focus and precision is what makes them really stand out and with Céline Fontaine and her husband Fred Robert (formerly of Armand Rousseau) at the helm, you best keep a close eye on how high this Domaine will climb!

What the critics say:

90-92/100Allen Meadows, Burghound

"A somber and restrained nose requires considerable swirling to coax the pretty aromas of lavender, red cherry, spice and violet. There is a taut muscularity to the mineral-inflected larger-scaled flavors that exude a fine bead of minerality on the more complex and longer finale."

90-92/100Neal Martin, Vinous

"Picked on August 29, earlier than the domaine's other reds, the 2018 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru has an attractive bouquet of red currant, raspberry and briar, all well defined and focused. The palate is balanced with a fine saline core. Quite robust and structured for a Volnay, but with satisfying precision and grip toward the finish. It should give at least a decade's worth of drinking pleasure. "
