Alongside its elder siblings, Valdicava's Rosso di Montalcino is extremely impressive, and very much a wine in its own right.
Strict volume rules means that only a certain percentage of an estate's wine can be classified Brunello, however good it is, so many rossos are comprised from declassified fruit, which see a shorter passage in oak and are released earlier. In a great year, you get a taste of the grand vin, in a more challenging vintage the most conscientious growers declassify more or all all their fruit into their rosso so you get an even higher quality product for the same price.
