The 2020 Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino (96 points, James Suckling) has just landed—now at an unexpected and very welcome 30% less than last year’s release, making it the best-priced Valdicava vintage currently available. In response to challenging market conditions, the estate has made a bold, consumer-friendly move without compromising on quality.
Production is down 30% this year, so no large formats were made. However, Valdicava's single-vineyard Montosoli—normally only produced in exceptional years and always a 100-pointer—is not being released in 2020. Instead, all the fruit from this legendary site has gone into the estate Brunello, giving it an extra level of depth and complexity.
With more 100-point Suckling scores than any other grower in the region, their cult status is well-earned, and the 2020 vintage is not one to miss.
What the critics say:
"Quite closed at the very first sniff, opening to reveal youthful aromas of small red fruits, intoxicating fresh violets, almost vinous character and some earthy tones. The palate is firm with medium body and velvety tannins that are a little hard on the finish now, yet balanced by refreshing acidity. Opens nicely at the end. Intense and polished style to this, yet it needs a little time for better integration. Best from 2025"
"Just a baby today, the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino is darkly alluring with a youthfully coy bouquet that requires coaxing as dusty earth and dried flowers slowly take on hints of incense and black cherries. It flows easily across the palate, silky and refined with building tension as brisk acidity and minerals mingle with edgy tannins toward the close. The 2019 finishes dramatically long and structured with a pleasantly bitter tinge. A resonance of salted licorice and cedar lingers on and on. Valdicava has captured the radiance of the vintage. "
