Optimal drinking window: 2026 - 2029
This soft, clean and bright white wine has exceptional Chardonnay aromas with a touch of fatness from the 20% of wine that was barrel fermented. There are notes of tropical fruits together with some citrus aromas such as lime and lemon. Beautifully balanced on the palate, it finishes with a long, fresh yet creamy aftertaste.
An excellent partner to fish and seafood but it really shows its class with a risotto.
This wine is at its absolute peak right now, showing that perfect balance of fresh fruit and subtle oak integration. Over the next year, the tropical fruit flavours will remain vibrant while the oak influence becomes even more seamlessly woven into the texture. By 2028, we'd expect the citrus brightness to soften slightly while developing more honeyed characteristics. After 2029, the wine will likely lose that zippy freshness that makes it so appealing, though it won't be unpleasant. This is definitely a wine to enjoy in its youth when that coastal Chilean character shines brightest.
Tasting Notes
AppearancePale gold with brilliant clarity and a hint of green at the rim.
NoseTropical fruits lead the way with ripe pineapple and mango, followed by bright citrus aromas of lime zest and lemon. Subtle vanilla and toast from the partial oak treatment adds depth without overwhelming the fruit.
PalateSoft and approachable with a creamy texture that doesn't sacrifice freshness. The tropical fruit carries through beautifully, balanced by crisp acidity that keeps everything lively. A touch of oak-derived richness fills out the mid-palate.
FinishLong and fresh with a creamy aftertaste that invites another sip.
Overall impressionA textbook example of modern Chilean Chardonnay at its most appealing.
Food Pairings
In Chile's coastal regions, this style of Chardonnay would traditionally accompany the abundant seafood harvest, particularly grilled sea bass or congrio (conger eel) with herbs. Local cooks would serve it alongside empanadas de mariscos (seafood empanadas) or a simple ceviche where the wine's acidity complements the citrus-cured fish perfectly. The creamy texture makes it ideal with traditional cazuela de cordero (lamb stew) or hearty seafood soups. Chileans also enjoy it with their excellent local cheeses, particularly the semi-hard varieties that echo the wine's balance of richness and freshness.
We think this wine would go well with
Serve well-chilled at 8-10°C to preserve that lovely freshness and acidity. No need to decant, but do let it warm slightly in the glass to show off the creamy texture from the barrel work. A standard white wine glass with a slightly wider bowl will help concentrate the tropical fruit aromas. Open just before serving as this is all about immediate pleasure rather than breathing time.
The Casablanca Valley sits just 30 kilometres from the Pacific Ocean, creating a cool maritime climate perfect for white wine production. Morning fogs roll in from the coast, moderating temperatures and extending the growing season, while clay-rich soils with good drainage provide ideal conditions for Chardonnay. The temperature differences between day and night preserve natural acidity while allowing full flavour development. These conditions naturally suit elegant, fresh styles rather than heavy, oaked expressions.
Casablanca Valley was Chile's first region planted specifically for cool-climate varietals, established in the 1980s when producers recognised its potential for premium whites. The DO regulations focus on maintaining the region's reputation for fresh, elegant wines that express the maritime influence rather than excessive ripeness. Unlike Chile's warmer interior valleys, Casablanca specialises in Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc that rival their European counterparts. The appellation has become synonymous with sophisticated Chilean white wine production.
The 2023 vintage in Casablanca Valley delivered exactly what this Pacific-cooled valley does best: a long, steady ripening season that let the grapes develop flavour without rushing. We saw a particularly cool summer that extended harvest well into April, giving winemakers the luxury of patience. The morning fogs rolled in faithfully from the ocean, keeping acidity bright whilst the afternoons provided just enough warmth to build concentration.
What emerged are wines with a taut, mineral-driven character that feels almost electric on the palate. The Sauvignon Blancs crackle with citrus precision, whilst the Pinot Noirs show that rare combination of delicate fruit and underlying structure that makes you reach for another glass. These wines are drinking beautifully now but the best bottles will reward cellaring for five to eight years. We find ourselves returning to this vintage again and again - it captures everything we love about Casablanca's ability to make wines that are both immediate and enduring.
