For ARTE, a contemporary artist is invited to create a memento of the history and identity of the San Leonardo Estate. Each edition symbolically begins and ends at the beginning of spring, following the seasonal cycle of wine production, and unfolds in different moments: residency, research, design and production.

For this third edition (San Leonardo, 2020 vintage) 'Memories of Reliable Things', artist Linda Fregni Nagler focused her research on the San Leonardo museum, founded in 1975 by the Marquis Carlo Guerrieri Gonzaga – a place that houses dozens of objects related to the history of the company and local rural society. The artist selected five objects from among those on display, and transformed them into images suspended in time.

We are proud to be offering ARTE exclusively in the UK.

"The latest vintage is a remarkable wine, fine-boned, pure and detailed, with herbal fruit, filigree tannins and the estate’s signature vein of spicy acidity. The nose is pure and herbaceous-led, rosehips, hawthorn, and wild mountain herbs from the carménère lead the aromatics, supported by classic Cabernet lead pencil, cedar and forest berries and spicier Merlot red plums. The palate is sapid and fresh, with crystalline blue and red fruits, capturing a floral purity, that progress in a linear fashion to the savoury, saline, dry spice-inflected finish. Carrying just 12.5% alcohol, this mid-weight charmer reinforces San Leonardo’s deserved reputation for paying homage to classic Bordeaux, focussed on energy and elegance."

What the critics say:

98/100Markus del Monego MW

"Purple colour with slightly violet hue and garnet tinges. Complex nose with aroma reminiscent of ripe plums, sweet blackcurrants, juicy blackberries, mulberries and black cherries. Roasted red peppers in the background, gingerbread spice, discreet toasting and fine oak. On the palate multi-layered with excellent aromatic depth, ripe fruit reminiscent of blackcurrants and blackberries, plums and black cherries, peppery spiciness in the finish, fine oak spices and hints of dried aromatic herbs. A great classic with excellent potential."

OUR GROWERS

Tenuta San Leonardo

Surrounded by blue skies, sloping vines and sublime Alpine mountains, the Tenuta di San Leonardo may be the most picturesque wine estate in the world. Originally a monastery, for three hundred years the Marchesi Guerrieri Gonzaga family have owned San Leonardo, bringing it from vinous obscurity to the very forefront of Italian winemaking. A long-time favourite of the cognoscenti, more recently the estate has recently achieved the global prominence it richly deserves.
