Optimal drinking window: Now - 2032
The 2023 Saumur Rouge from Domaine Guiberteau is a supple, medium-bodied Loire red built on 100% Cabernet Franc - fresh and direct, with bright red-fruit aromas of cherry and raspberry, subtle herbal and earthy hints, and a touch of forest-floor complexity. It has a mineral-tinged finish that keeps things clean and refreshing, and is the sort of wine that slips easily into a casual dinner, but still has enough character to pair with grilled meats, charcuterie, or tomato-based dishes.
Domaine Guiberteau is a family-run estate in Saumur (Loire Valley), now managed by Romain Guiberteau. Since 1996 they’ve focused on quality over quantity, converting to organic viticulture and working with sustainable, minimal-intervention methods. Their vineyards range from 7 to 80 years old.
This 2023 is drinking at its peak right now, with primary fruit flavours perfectly balanced by developing complexity. Over the next year or two, we expect the cherry and raspberry fruit to integrate further with the earthy, herbal elements, creating a more unified whole. The mineral backbone will become more pronounced whilst the tannins soften completely, reaching optimum drinking around 2027-2028. Beyond 2032, the fresh fruit character that makes this wine so appealing will begin to fade, though it will remain perfectly pleasant—just less vibrant and distinctive.
Tasting Notes
AppearanceBright ruby red with good clarity and a hint of purple at the rim.
NoseFresh cherry and raspberry dominate, with subtle herbal hints of green pepper and dried herbs. There's an underlying earthiness that suggests forest floor and wet limestone, plus a touch of tobacco leaf that adds sophistication.
PalateMedium-bodied and supple, with bright red fruit that feels fresh rather than jammy. The mineral backbone runs through the middle, providing structure without heaviness, whilst gentle tannins give just enough grip. That characteristic Loire herbaceous quality adds interest without overwhelming the fruit.
FinishClean and mineral-tinged with lingering red fruit and a refreshing lift of acidity.
Overall impressionA textbook Loire Cabernet Franc that balances immediate appeal with genuine character.
Food Pairings
In the Loire Valley, locals would pair this with rillettes de Tours—the region's famous potted pork—served on crusty bread, or with boudin blanc sausages grilled over vine cuttings. River fish like pike-perch or salmon from the Loire itself, often prepared with beurre blanc sauce, make classic matches, as does the area's exceptional goat's cheese, particularly Crottin de Chavignol. Game birds from the nearby forests, simply roasted with herbs, showcase the wine's earthy complexity, whilst the local preference for tomato-based dishes with fresh herbs mirrors the wine's own herbal character.
We think this wine would go well with
Serve lightly chilled at 14-16°C—cooler than most reds but this enhances the fresh fruit and mineral qualities that define Loire Cabernet Franc. No need to decant; this wine is built for immediate enjoyment and benefits from that direct, fresh character. Pour into medium-sized Burgundy glasses or standard wine glasses—nothing too large as you want to concentrate those delicate herbal and mineral aromas rather than dissipate them.
The Guiberteau vineyards sit on Saumur's characteristic limestone and clay soils, which provide excellent drainage whilst retaining enough moisture to sustain the vines through dry summers. The limestone bedrock imparts that distinctive mineral backbone that defines great Loire wines, whilst the varied soil composition across their different plots adds complexity. The continental climate with Atlantic influences creates the perfect conditions for Cabernet Franc to ripen slowly whilst maintaining its natural acidity and herbal character.
Saumur Rouge represents some of the Loire Valley's most approachable and food-friendly reds, made predominantly from Cabernet Franc with occasional additions of Cabernet Sauvignon or Pineau d'Aunis. The appellation covers both banks of the Loire around the historic town of Saumur, where limestone soils and a temperate climate create wines with less intensity than neighbouring Chinon or Bourgueil but often more elegance. Unlike the more famous Saumur-Champigny, basic Saumur Rouge allows for fruit from a wider area and tends to be more immediately appealing.
The 2023 Loire vintage feels like the region caught a break after several years of climate extremes. Spring arrived gently, without the brutal frosts that have haunted growers in recent seasons, and summer brought the kind of balanced warmth that lets vines ripen steadily rather than sprint to the finish line. We love how this steady rhythm shows in the wines — there's a naturalness to the ripening that translates into vibrant, focused flavours across the board.
What landed in our cellars has that classic Loire precision we're always hunting for, but with more flesh on the bones than some of the leaner years. The Sauvignon Blancs from Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé crackle with mineral energy while actually filling your mouth, and the Chenin Blancs from the middle Loire show beautiful balance between their natural acidity and ripe fruit character. Most of these wines are singing right now — the whites especially have hit that sweet spot where youth and drinkability overlap perfectly. The reds will reward a bit more patience, but honestly, we're already dipping into our allocations because they're so bloody delicious.
