Optimal drinking window: 2026 - 2030
Rustenberg's 2024 Chardonnay comes from one of Stellenbosch's most historic estates, where Burgundian restraint meets South African sunshine. This isn't the oaked blockbuster you might expect from the Cape, but rather a wine that puts fruit and freshness first.
We taste bright citrus and green apple backed by just enough oak to add texture without overwhelming. The acidity keeps everything lively, while subtle mineral notes speak to the estate's unique terroir on the slopes of the Simonsberg.
This 2024 Chardonnay is drinking beautifully now with primary fruit flavours at their peak freshness and vibrant acidity well-integrated. Over the next 2-3 years, the citrus notes will soften slightly while developing more complex honeyed characteristics and deeper mineral complexity. The oak will become more seamlessly woven into the wine's structure. After 2029, the fresh fruit character will begin to fade, though the wine may gain interesting nutty, brioche-like complexity. Best enjoyed within its first five years for optimal freshness and varietal character.
What the critics say:
"Dried apples, apricots, lemon curd and salted butter on the nose of this full-bodied white. It’s buttery and engaging with a gentle toastiness. Sustainable. Drink now. Screw cap."
"The 2024 Chardonnay comes from 13 different blocks on the estate and from purchased fruit, with a lot of maritime influence. Wild fermented in 300-litre barrels with 20% new oak, it has a straight-down-the-line New World Chardonnay nose with tropical traits, clean and fresh. The palate is well balanced, with a brisk peachy opening, hints of tropical fruit in the background, but with fine tension."
Tasting Notes
AppearancePale gold with bright clarity and a hint of green at the rim.
NoseFresh citrus blossom and green apple lead, followed by subtle vanilla and toasted almonds from careful oak integration. There's a clean mineral edge that speaks to the granite soils, with hints of white peach emerging as the wine opens.
PalateMedium-bodied with bright acidity that carries flavours of lime zest and Granny Smith apple. The oak is restrained, adding texture rather than flavour, while a thread of minerality runs through the middle palate. The balance between fruit freshness and subtle richness is expertly judged.
FinishClean and crisp with lingering citrus and a touch of chalky minerality.
Overall impressionAn elegant, food-friendly Chardonnay that prioritises freshness and terroir expression over power.
Food Pairings
In the Western Cape, this style of Chardonnay would traditionally accompany fresh seafood from the Atlantic coast, particularly grilled kingklip or snoek with lemon and herbs. Local favourites include Cape Malay curry dishes with their aromatic spice blends, where the wine's acidity cuts through coconut-based sauces. It's also perfect with ostrich carpaccio, a regional delicacy, or bobotie served with yellow rice, where the wine's freshness balances the dish's sweet and savoury elements.
We think this wine would go well with
Serve well-chilled at 8-10°C to preserve the crisp acidity and fresh fruit character. No decanting required - simply open and pour into medium-sized white wine glasses to concentrate the delicate aromatics. If serving from the fridge, allow 10-15 minutes to warm slightly and reveal the wine's full complexity.
Rustenberg's vineyards sit on the south-facing slopes of the Simonsberg mountain in Stellenbosch, benefiting from decomposed granite soils with excellent drainage. The elevation and mountain aspect provide cool morning mists and afternoon breezes that preserve acidity in the grapes. These weathered granite soils, combined with the cooler microclimate, produce Chardonnay with natural freshness and mineral complexity rather than tropical richness.
Stellenbosch is South Africa's most prestigious wine region, known for its Mediterranean climate and diverse terroir spanning from coastal influences to mountain slopes. The region benefits from cooling south-easterly winds and varied soils from decomposed granite to clay, allowing for exceptional expression of both red and white varieties. While famous for Cabernet Sauvignon and red blends, Stellenbosch also produces some of the Cape's finest cool-climate Chardonnays from elevated vineyard sites.
The 2024 vintage in Stellenbosch caught many producers off guard with its early ripening, as warm conditions through the growing season pushed harvest dates forward by two to three weeks. We're still piecing together the full picture of this vintage, but the consensus from our producer friends suggests a year that demanded nimble decision-making rather than patience. The lack of significant rainfall stress during key ripening periods meant growers had to watch sugar levels closely, with many opting for earlier picks to preserve freshness.
What emerged from the cellars shows wines with immediate appeal rather than the brooding structure Stellenbosch often produces. The Cabernet Sauvignon carries more upfront fruit character than usual, whilst Chenin Blanc from the older vineyard sites shows particular promise with concentrated flavours and good natural acidity. We suspect these wines will drink beautifully in their youth, making them accessible from 2025 until 2032 for most reds, though the very best Cabernet blends may reward those willing to wait until 2028.
