The Mastrojanni estate lies in the south-east of Montalcino, tucked away up a dirt track near the village of Castelnuovo dell’Abate. The style here is firmly traditional and deeply rooted in terroir, with a clear avoidance of barriques in favour of more classical ageing that allows Sangiovese to speak clearly. Since the estate was acquired by the Illy family, quality and consistency have reached new heights, with Mastrojanni now widely regarded as one of the top ten producers in the region.

The vineyards are in a true golden phase, with mature vines delivering what Monica Larner has described as “prime production,” resulting in wines of haunting depth and expression. Alongside its celebrated Brunello, Mastrojanni produces an outstanding estate Rosso: refined and elegant in fruit, yet offering a level of structure, tannin and depth rarely found at the denomination.
