From one of the Douro’s most majestic estates, Quinta do Vesuvio 2000 is a vintage Port of real presence and poise.

The 2000 vintage at Quinta do Vesuvio was one of small yields but exceptional quality. Poor weather during flowering drastically reduced the crop, yet the remaining fruit ripened perfectly through a warm, steady summer. With yields as low as 720g per vine, concentration was superb—Touriga Nacional reached an ideal 13.4º Baumé—and the mild harvest conditions allowed gentle, even fermentations in the estate’s traditional granite lagares. The result: a powerful, beautifully balanced Vesuvio, rich in fruit and elegance.

Perched high in the Douro Superior, Vesuvio is a legendary estate with a long reputation for handcrafted Ports - foot-trodden in granite lagares, just as they always have been. Now part of the Symington family’s stable, it remains one of the few houses where tradition truly defines the style. The 2000 vintage shows Vesuvio at its best: generous, structured, and effortlessly noble.

At 26 years old, this wine still shows the saturated colour and primary black fruit of a far younger Port, a sign of just how much structure the 2000 vintage carries. The tannins, though ripe, remain firm and are only beginning to soften, suggesting the wine is still some years from its secondary phase of dried fruit, spice and leather. We would expect real complexity to build through the 2030s, with a long plateau to follow and no urgency to drink before 2050. This is a Port for the patient, though it is already drinking with real generosity for those who prefer fruit over age.

What the critics say:

94/100 International Wine Challenge

"Intense concentrated chocolate, black cherry, liquorice and damson nose. Complex, full intense fruit palate, with firm grippy tannins, good body, and a persistent finish with spices and pepper. (Gold, 2009)"

92/100 Stephen Tanzer, Vinous

"Saturated ruby-purple. Superripe, primal arornas of black raspberry, maple syrup and dark chocolate; very sweet but also highly aromatic. Lush, chewy, very sweet and rich, with outstanding depth of black fruit and spice flavor. Hugely rich and ripe but not over the top. Serious, ripe tannins are currently covered by baby fat, making this very broad, thick, slightly spirity wine deceptively approachable now."

Tasting Notes

AppearanceDeep, saturated ruby-purple, still youthful for its age.

NoseDark chocolate, black raspberry and damson mingle with liquorice and a faint maple sweetness, intense and aromatic rather than brooding.

PalateFull-bodied and lush, with ripe black fruit, baking spice and a wash of sweetness that never tips into heaviness, held together by firm, grippy tannins.

FinishLong and spiced, with a peppery lift that keeps the richness honest.

Overall impressionGenerous and structured in equal measure, a Vesuvio built for the long haul despite its deceptive charm today.

Food Pairings

In the Douro, a vintage Port like this would traditionally close a meal alongside hard, salty cheeses such as Serra da Estrela or an aged São Jorge, the richness of the wine playing off the sharpness of the cheese. Dark chocolate desserts and roasted nuts are the obvious local partners, but we think it is just as happy with a wedge of Stilton by the fire. Some Douro families still serve it simply, with a bowl of walnuts and quiet conversation, letting the wine do the talking.

We think this wine would go well with

FAQs

What does Quinta do Vesuvio 2000 taste like?

Rich and concentrated, with black cherry, damson, dark chocolate and liquorice, backed by firm tannins and a long peppery finish.

Is this Port ready to drink now?

Yes, it drinks well today thanks to its ripe, generous fruit, though the firm tannins suggest it has plenty more to give if you can wait until 2050.

What food should I serve it with?

Hard, salty cheeses like aged Serra da Estrela or Stilton, dark chocolate desserts, or simply a bowl of walnuts in the Douro tradition.

How should I serve and decant it?

Serve at 16-18°C and decant for three to four hours to soften the tannins and separate the wine from its natural sediment.

Is this wine worth cellaring?

Very much so, this is a vintage Port of real structure from a celebrated, low-yielding year, built to reward patience well into the 2040s and beyond.

What grape varieties are used?

A traditional Douro blend led by Touriga Nacional, alongside Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca, foot-trodden in granite lagares.

OUR GROWERS

Quinta do Vesuvio

Quinta do Vesuvio has been farmed as a single, self-contained estate since the nineteenth century, now under the custodianship of the Symington family, who bought it in 1989 and have kept its traditions resolutely intact. Grapes are still foot-trodden in granite lagares, a labour-intensive method most houses abandoned decades ago, because the family believes nothing else extracts colour and tannin with the same gentleness. It remains a vintage-only Port house, declaring a wine solely in years judged worthy of the name.
