Domaine de Montille is one of Burgundy’s most revered estates and this burgeoning family property is very much at the top of its game, producing wines of exceptional quality: scintillating, proper Burgundies, unusually across both reds and whites.

Features as one of the Top 10 Côte de Beaune Red Wine Producers and Top 10 Côte de Beaune White Wine Producers in Tim Atkin's Burgundy 2022 Special Report.

Self-confessed ‘acid freak’ Brian Sieve was especially careful with battonage and lees-stirring of the Chardonnays in 2022, to maintain freshness and verve, noting that it was not a high acid vintage. A little less new oak (not that there is ever more than just enough) and whole bunches in the reds than in the previous solar vintages, plus the gentler acid profile means the wines have a charm and immediacy to rival any vintage we’ve tasted from the domaine.

“Situated in the north of the appellation, abutting Meursault, this south-easterly site is almost at the top of the hill, so gets plenty of sun but cooler nights preserve acidity, and the rocky limestone and marl soils transmit minerality and energy. Often sightly later harvested this achieves full phenolic ripeness but retains freshness. Raised in large (600-litre) barrels, 15% of which is new. Intense and focused nose of ground almonds, fresh pears, stone dust, sweet meadow grass and lilac, leading to a vivid, clearly delineated attack, bristling with citrus acidity. Very mineral and fresh, clean and sapid, with a purity and harmony to the core ripe orchard fruit and white stone elements and good tension on the finish.”

OUR GROWERS

Domaine de Montille

Domaine de Montille is now in its ninth generation under the stewardship of sibling duo Étienne & Alix, who have largely remained true to their father’s vision of creating elegant, pure and balanced wines.

In fact Étienne was instrumental in pushing the sustainability of the Domaine by abandoning all chemical fertilisers and herbicides in 1985 and fully transitioning to biodynamic farming in 2005.
