This small-scale Burgundian estate based in Vergisson in the heart of the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation, has about 9.5 hectares planted mainly to old-vine Chardonnay and a little Gamay. The domaine has been farmed biodynamically since 2005, with manual harvesting, low yields and separate vinification of each parcel to express terroir distinctively. Their wines — often barrel-fermented and aged on lees — has richness and volume, the faint hint of something exotic, but then there's also incredible tension, drive and energy.
In 2024 the wines from Saumaize-Michelin continue to show this commitment to site and purity; harvests from parcels like Sur la Roche and La Maréchaude reflect old vines and limestone-rich soils, giving chardonnays that combine vibrant acidity with depth and precise minerality.
Domaine Saumaize-Michelin is one of Tim Atkin's Top 15 Mâconnais Producers.
What the critics say:
"A vineyard left abandoned until 2012, Vivien called it “a crazy amount of work” to restore these vines sitting on a 40% slope—one of the steepest Premier Crus. How lucky we are to have this sensuous beauty as a result of the domaine’s vision. The wine’s acidity arcs across the palate, girding its flattering, juicy texture. Fall orchard scents, pomelo and crushed hazelnuts carry into a substantial finish."
