Domaine de Montille is one of Burgundy’s most revered estates and this burgeoning family property is very much at the top of its game, producing wines of exceptional quality: scintillating, proper Burgundies, unusually across both reds and whites.
Features as one of the Top 10 Côte de Beaune Red Wine Producers and Top 10 Côte de Beaune White Wine Producers in Tim Atkin's Burgundy 2022 Special Report.
Self-confessed ‘acid freak’ Brian Sieve was especially careful with battonage and lees-stirring of the Chardonnays in 2022, to maintain freshness and verve, noting that it was not a high acid vintage. A little less new oak (not that there is ever more than just enough) and whole bunches in the reds than in the previous solar vintages, plus the gentler acid profile means the wines have a charm and immediacy to rival any vintage we’ve tasted from the domaine.
“A south-facing slope, between the 1er crus ‘les Combes Dessus’ and ‘Le Clos Micot”. On gravelly, red-clay rich soils. 50% whole bunch and 20% new oak. An attractive nose of bright red fruits and cedar, with earthy, berry notes. Palate is nicely drawn, supple, with crunchy blue and red fruits, and good poise and persistence.”

What the critics say:
"One third whole bunch vinification. The rest is destemmed to avoid it being too tannic. Glowing red with some depth. There is an explosion of vibrant raspberry fruit with a little strawberry and white pepper. So much energy to the fruit here, the right acidity and very good length. Bravo. A long finish full of sunshine. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: October 2023. *****"
"The 2022 Pommard Les Cras has a tightly wound, loamy bouquet with more black than red fruit, a subtle marine influence in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannins, not powerful but taut and fresh with a bright, sapid finish. Very fine."
