Optimal drinking window: Now - 2031
Poggio Argentiera was founded in 1997 with the purchase of the Adua farm, a property which went back to the early 20th century when the Maremma marshes began to be drained, today the winery owns over 50 acres (21 hectares) of vineyards all in the Morellino di Scansano appellation.
Their philosophy combines the work in the vineyard with the utmost respect for the vine and its production cycle and, starting from 2009, the management of the entire Estate has been converted following the principles and practices of organic agriculture and farming, with the objective of researching perfect balance between the vines and the surrounding environment.
"Red fruit and violets. Complex, dusky nose, combination of sweet red fruits – cherries and plums, with peppery darker notes and dry spice – cardamom pods and sandalwood. Palate is juicy and taut, with nice purity and zest to the fruit, literally – notes of orange peel jostle with red and sour cherries and spiced plums, and there is tobaccic quality to the salty tannins. Very accomplished winemaking at this level – the quality of fruit from the Baccinello vineyard really seems to shine."
Tom Harrow, Wine Guru
The 2019 is drinking at its peak now, with primary fruit still vibrant and the herbal spice well integrated. Over the next 2-3 years, expect the red fruit to deepen slightly whilst the tobacco and spice notes become more prominent. The wine should plateau around 2028-2030, maintaining its juicy character whilst gaining some earthy complexity. After 2031, the fruit may start to fade, though the structure suggests graceful rather than rapid decline.
What the critics say:
"The 2019 Poggio Argentiera Maremmante from the Maremma in Tuscany. What was once mosquito-plaged marshland is now home to some of Italy’s finest wines (think Ornellaia, Solaia and Sassicaia) and this Cabernet Franc/Syrah blend (organic, natch) is a deliciously herbal, spicy and richly fruity gem. Again, it’s a wine to enjoy in its youth so uncork and enjoy!"
Food Pairings
In the Maremma, this would pair beautifully with wild boar ragu over pici pasta, the hand-rolled local specialty. The region's coastal location means plenty of grilled fish, particularly branzino with rosemary, whilst the hills provide game birds like guinea fowl roasted with fennel and olives. Don't overlook the local pecorino cheese, aged in caves and perfect with the wine's herbal notes, or a simple bistecca alla Maremmana with local herbs.
We think this wine would go well with
Serve at 16-17°C to let the fruit and spice shine without overwhelming the palate. No need to decant, though an hour of breathing in the glass will help the herbal complexity emerge. Use a medium-sized red wine glass rather than oversized Burgundy bowls. The wine's freshness means it will hold well for a day or two once opened if stored properly.
The Baccinello vineyard sits in Tuscany's Maremma, where ancient marshland has been transformed into prime viticultural territory. The soils are a mix of clay and limestone with good drainage, whilst the Mediterranean climate brings warm days tempered by coastal breezes. This coastal influence adds a distinctive mineral salinity to the wines, whilst the warm climate ensures full ripeness of both Cabernet Franc and Syrah.
Morellino di Scansano DOCG covers the hills and coastal plains of southern Tuscany's Maremma region. Traditionally focused on Sangiovese (called Morellino locally), the appellation now embraces international varieties that thrive in the Mediterranean climate. The area has gained recognition for producing wines that combine Tuscan elegance with a more relaxed, coastal character than the more famous Chianti zones to the north.
