Marchesi Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva 2022 is one of the historic labels of the Marchesi Antinori family, whose winemaking history in Tuscany stretches back to 1385. Since 2011 the wine has been sourced entirely from the vineyards of the Tenuta Tignanello estate in the heart of the Chianti Classico zone, where limestone- and alberese-rich soils at around 350–400 metres altitude are particularly well suited to Sangiovese.
The wine is based mainly on Sangiovese, with a small proportion of international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon to add structure and depth. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with around 10–14 days of maceration to extract colour and tannin. After alcoholic fermentation, the wine undergoes full malolactic conversion and is aged for roughly 12 months in French and Hungarian oak barrels before further bottle maturation prior to release.
The result is a classic Chianti Classico Riserva style: structured yet polished, combining bright Sangiovese fruit with subtle spice and savoury complexity from the oak ageing.
What the critics say:
"A blend of 92% Sangiovese, 4% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon, the Marchesi Antinori 2022 Chianti Classico Riserva Tenuta Tignanello Marchese Antinori is a wine of energy, brightness and sweet tannins. It shows that Tignanello signature, given that fruit comes from the same estate as the flagship Tignanello. The oak aging comes through, but it remains balanced against the primary character of the wine. It is not excessive on any front, and it shows elegant mineral notes to close."
"The 2022 Chianti Classico Riserva Marchese Antinori is terrific. Soft and pliant, with fabulous balance, the 2022 is a total charmer. Antinori's style today, one that favors a lighter hand than in the past, works so well here. Succulent red cherry, spice, new leather and rose petal are front and center. All of this fruit is from Antinori's Tignanello property. It captures all the essence of site in a more approachable style that is undeniably appealing."
