Leeuwin Estate's Art Series Shiraz represents Margaret River's cooler, more elegant take on Australia's signature grape. From one of the region's founding families, this 2023 vintage captures the maritime influence that sets Margaret River apart from the warmer inland regions. The overall impression is one of restraint and elegance, aligned with Leeuwin Estate’s house style.
The label artwork for the 2023 Art Series Shiraz is titled Arulya and is by Tjulkiwa Atira Atira, an Indigenous Australian artist whose work is deeply connected to country, culture, and storytelling. The artwork forms part of Leeuwin Estate’s long‑standing Art Series tradition, which integrates contemporary Australian art into the identity of its wines. Arulya brings a cultural and visual dimension to the bottle, reflecting themes of place, heritage, and connection.
The Leeuwin Estate vineyards benefit from Margaret River's unique maritime climate, with afternoon sea breezes moderating temperatures and extending the growing season. The soils are predominantly gravel over clay, providing excellent drainage while retaining enough moisture for consistent ripening. This combination of cooling ocean influence and well-draining soils creates the conditions for Shiraz that combines concentration with freshness, avoiding the jammy characteristics of hotter inland regions.
Margaret River is Western Australia's premium wine region, established in the 1960s and renowned for its maritime climate that creates wines of elegance and structure. The region sits between two oceans, creating a unique mesoclimate that's cooler than most Australian wine regions. While Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay dominate plantings, Shiraz here develops a distinctive character marked by pepper, eucalyptus, and savoury complexity rather than the ripe, jammy profile found in warmer regions like Barossa Valley.
Margaret River's 2023 vintage delivered one of those seasons that reminds you why this region has earned its reputation. The growing season unfolded with textbook conditions: a mild, wet winter replenished soil moisture, followed by a warm, dry summer that allowed grapes to ripen steadily without the dramatic temperature swings that can unsettle delicate varieties. Harvest stretched through March and into April, with growers able to pick at optimal ripeness rather than racing against weather fronts.
The result is a vintage that captures Margaret River at its most expressive. Cabernet Sauvignon shows the structure and depth this region does so well, with firm tannins wrapped around dark fruit that promises excellent ageing potential. Chardonnay displays the minerality and citrus precision that has made Margaret River a benchmark for this variety in Australia. We think these wines will reward patience - the reds need until 2026 to start showing their best, whilst the whites are already drinking beautifully and should hold well until 2030.
What the critics say:
"It may be too early to call for certain, but the 2023 season in Western Australia, specifically in Margaret River, is shaping up to be one of the very best. And I make that comment with 2018 front of mind. The season was mild, dry (mostly) and long, and it seems to have extracted the best from most producers, in all regions, across all varieties in Western Australia. A very exciting consistency of condition occurred. I, for one, have been actively putting my money where my mouth is and investing in wines from this vintage. I know I'll regret it if I don't. The 2023 Art Series Shiraz, which at this stage is pre-release, shows precision and detail on the nose, with raspberry leaf tea and iodine, blood and blood orange, licorice and milk chocolate. In the mouth, the acidity is intense, but it works so nicely within the layers of gently settled tannins—like sheets of tissue paper. It's a lovely wine, wearing the benefits of intensive viticultural work and matching effort in the winery."
