Leeuwin Estate was born in the early to mid-70s when founders Denis and Tricia Horgan decided to plant vines on their cattle ranch, a few miles in from the coast in Western Australia’s Margaret River, a few 100 miles south of Perth. With Robert Mondavi on hand to give advice and guidance in the early days, they hit the ground running.
Within a couple of years of their first vintage (1979) they were winning both plaudits and awards worldwide. They were amongst the first to plant Chardonnay, using various Burgundian clones, in an area more familiar with Bordeaux varietals and what a great decision that was. The Art Series Chardonnay became one of the most must-have wines of Australia almost overnight.
What the critics say:
"Let's put it this way. This is the closest I have come to awarding a wine 100 points... Stellar wine from a stellar vintage. The remarkable this is that this is a wine 100 percent barrel fermented in new French oak barriques with regular lees stirring for 11 months - and it certainly doesn't taste excessive, or even slightly oak. It has such high-fidelity purity with complex seductive aromatics of vanilla bean and light oatmeal with a cutting minerality and spicy lift. But the palate, oh the palate. This is where things start to explode. Power, poise and persistence with a dry savouriness balancing the intense ripe fruit. It is such a long finish with an ever so slightly, charry finish completing a remarkable wine."
"This vintage is a triumph, with firm fruit surrounded by a rigid suit of armour that compresses its flanks and ratchets up the drama. This adds immeasurable length to the flavour without any diminuendo in power or persistence. The fruit is cradled with beautiful blonde oak and shot through with sublime pith and herb details allowing the flavours to transcend expectation."
"Tauter than vintages of yore, boasting complex aromas of pear distillate, citrus verbena, nougat, cashew, cedar-tinged oak and succulent white peach. Immaculately constructed, pure and rather wonderful. Founded on a tensile stream of pungent mineral, transcendental poise and scintillating length. There is little out of place here. Superb New World chardonnay. Drink or hold. Screw cap."
