Optimal drinking window: 2026 - 2040
In the glass, Kopke's 10 year old Tawny shows a warm golden hue with an amber edge. Aromas of dried fruit, spice, honey and gentle wood lead to a smooth, rounded palate with layers of dried fig and nut. The finish is long and elegant.
Delicious with foie gras, nutty cheeses, chocolate desserts, or walnut-based pastries. Serve slightly chilled at 12–14°C.
Kopke measures time through remarkable vintages. Each tawny is a blend of carefully aged wines, and the age on the label reflects the average age of that final blend - history preserved in every bottle.
Hand-picked grapes are fermented in traditional lagares, with maceration to draw out colour and flavour. Once the right sweetness is reached, grape spirit is added, and the wine matures for years in oak casks, developing depth, spice and complexity.
Unlike vintage port, this 10-year tawny is already at its peak when released, having completed its primary development during wood ageing. It will maintain its current character for the next 10-15 years, though the fruit may integrate further and the nutty, spicy elements might become more prominent. There's no benefit to extended cellaring - this wine is designed for drinking pleasure now. After 2040, you might notice the vibrant fruit beginning to fade, though it will remain perfectly drinkable.
Tasting Notes
AppearanceWarm golden amber with a bright, clear rim that catches the light beautifully.
NoseDried figs and dates mingle with toasted almonds and a whisper of cinnamon spice. Gentle oak provides structure without overpowering, while honey and orange peel add brightness. There's an appealing warmth that speaks of careful ageing.
PalateSmooth and rounded entry with layers of dried fruit unfolding gradually. Walnut and hazelnut flavours develop mid-palate, supported by well-integrated sweetness and warming alcohol. The texture is silky rather than heavy, with perfect balance between fruit, oak, and fortifying spirit.
FinishLong and elegant with lingering spice and a gentle warmth that invites another sip.
Overall impressionThis captures everything we love about aged tawny port - sophistication without pomposity, complexity without confusion.
Food Pairings
In the Douro, aged tawny port traditionally appears with rich, nutty desserts like toucinho do céu (almond cake) or the famous pastéis de nata. Local cheeses, particularly the creamy Serra da Estrela or aged goat cheeses from the hillsides, make natural partners. During the holidays, it's the classic accompaniment to figos cheios (stuffed figs) and other dried fruit confections. The Portuguese also enjoy it with chocolate-based desserts or simply with a handful of toasted almonds as an evening digestif.
We think this wine would go well with
Serve slightly chilled at 12-14°C to highlight the wine's elegance and prevent the alcohol from overwhelming the delicate fruit and nut flavours. No need to decant - simply pour and enjoy. A traditional port glass or small tulip-shaped glass works best, concentrating the aromatics while allowing the wine to breathe. Once opened, tawny port keeps well for several weeks if recorked and stored in a cool place.
The Douro Valley's steep, terraced vineyards carved into schist and granite soils create the perfect conditions for port production. The continental climate brings scorching summers and cold winters, concentrating flavours in the traditional port varieties. These harsh growing conditions, combined with poor soils that force vines to struggle, produce the intense, structured wines that develop such remarkable complexity during their long wood ageing in Kopke's cellars.
Port DOC covers the entire Douro Valley, but the rules are strict: only indigenous Portuguese varieties, traditional stone lagar fermentation where possible, and fortification with grape spirit to halt fermentation. Tawny port specifically must age in wood, developing its characteristic amber colour and nutty, oxidative character that distinguishes it from the fruit-forward ruby styles. The age statement on the label represents the average age of the final blend.
FAQs
What does this tawny port taste like?
Warm and nutty with dried figs, honey, and gentle spice - think of the best Christmas cake flavours in liquid form, but more elegant.
When should I drink this port?
It's ready to drink now and will stay at its best for the next decade or so - no need to cellar this one.
What food pairs well with tawny port?
Anything with nuts, dried fruit, or chocolate works beautifully - try it with aged cheeses, Christmas pudding, or simply some good dark chocolate.
How should I serve this wine?
Serve slightly chilled at 12-14°C in small glasses - no need to decant, just pour and enjoy.
How is this different from ruby port?
Tawny port ages in wood, developing amber colour and nutty, spicy flavours, while ruby port stays fruit-forward and red - think evolution versus preservation.
How long will it keep once opened?
Much longer than table wine - several weeks if recorked and kept cool, thanks to the fortification and oxidative ageing style.
