Vin de Constance might easily be mistaken for a renowned regional wine like Sauternes or Tokaji, given its rich history and cultural significance—it’s mentioned in Austen novels and was a favourite of Napoleon during his exile, as noted by Neal. However, this remarkable wine is the creation of Klein Constantia, a picturesque estate in South Africa that has been quietly producing one of the world’s most distinctive and collectible whites since 1685.
Under the guidance of winemaker Matt Day, Vin de Constance has reached new heights. The reduced use of new oak and aging in larger foudres have marked a fresh chapter in the wine's evolution, enhancing its character and complexity.
Drinking window: 2025 - 2050
What the critics say:
"Powerful apricot, chamomile, white tea, pineapple, preserved lemon, white flowers, gentle gunsmoke, intense, concentrated, vivid, just superb quality, spinning and stretching out on the finish. A wonderful vintage of Vin de Constance. Matthew Day winemaker, owners are Zdenek Bakala, Charmes Harman, Hubert de Boüard, Bruno Prats and Hans Astrom."
"Produced in what Matt Day describes as a "perfect" year from Vin de Constance, featuring a long, cool, three-week harvest, the 2021 release has no botrytis but amazing concentration, freshness and intensity. Combining grapes from 25 batches, this confirms the wine's standing as one of the world's great stickies, with layers of orange blossom, jasmine, quince, marmalade and tarte tatin, 168 grams of residual sugar and remarkable freshness and palate length."
