About Kingsyaad, Jamaican Rum, Nv - 50cl

Born in the lush, tropical landscape of Jamaica, Kingsyaad Rum takes its distinctive character from the island’s unique climate and natural beauty.

Local molasses undergoes a slow, natural fermentation of up to two weeks, allowing wild Jamaican yeasts to develop intense flavours and high ester levels. The rum is then aged for up to eight years in Jamaica’s tropical climate, creating a rich, complex and beautifully balanced spirit with no added sugar.

Aromatic and expressive, Kingsyaad opens with notes of coffee, cacao, tobacco and tropical fruit. The palate is powerful yet rounded, revealing cacao and coffee alongside leather and sandalwood. Its long, elegant finish returns to notes of cherry and chocolate, leaving a refined and balanced impression.

As a non-vintage rum already aged up to eight years, Kingsyaad is released ready to drink and does not meaningfully evolve in bottle the way a wine would — the transformation has already happened in barrel. That said, an already-opened bottle will soften slightly over a week or two as it breathes, the more aggressive ester notes integrating into something rounder. There is no particular benefit to long-term storage; this is a rum to enjoy now, with intention. We would not hold an open bottle beyond a year without noticing some fade in the high aromatic top notes that make it distinctive.

Tasting Notes

AppearanceDeep amber with a warm mahogany core, slow and viscous legs on the glass.

NoseRoasted cacao and dark coffee upfront, with tobacco leaf and ripe banana drifting in behind. There is a wild, almost funky aromatic lift — classic high-ester Jamaica — that keeps things interesting rather than straightforwardly sweet.

PalateRich and round, with bitter chocolate and espresso giving way to leather and dry sandalwood. The absence of added sugar keeps the texture honest and the structure clean — this has grip without being aggressive.

FinishLong and composed, circling back to cherry and dark chocolate with a dry, faintly smoky fade.

Overall impressionA serious, aromatic Jamaican rum that earns its complexity through process rather than additives.

Food Pairings

In Jamaica, rum is rarely far from the table. The natural pairing is jerk — specifically slow-cooked jerk pork or chicken from the pits around Boston Bay in Portland, where the smoke and allspice echo the rum's own roasted depth. Oxtail stew braised with butter beans is another natural match, the richness of the meat standing up to the spirit's intensity. Dark chocolate — ideally 70% or above, local if you can find it — works brilliantly as a simple pairing with the bitter cacao notes in the glass. For something more indulgent, a rum-soaked Jamaican black cake at Christmas is the island's answer to a perfectly matched digestif moment.

FAQs

What does Kingsyaad taste like?

Bold and aromatic, with roasted cacao, dark coffee, and tobacco on the nose, moving to leather and sandalwood on the palate, and finishing on cherry and dark chocolate. It is distinctly Jamaican in character — high in esters, which gives it that wild, intensely aromatic quality the island is famous for.

Is this rum meant to be sipped neat or used in cocktails?

Both, honestly, but sipping it neat first is the right move. It has enough complexity and structure to stand on its own, and no added sugar means the palate stays clean and defined. In a cocktail, it makes a serious Rum Old Fashioned or a Mai Tai with real backbone.

Does this rum contain added sugar?

No. Kingsyaad is made without any added sugar, which puts it in a relatively small category of rums that let the distillate and ageing do all the work. It means what you taste is the real thing rather than sweetness masking a simpler spirit.

How should I store an open bottle?

Keep it upright, away from direct light and heat, and seal it well. An opened bottle will remain in good shape for months, though the most volatile aromatic notes — the funky, high-ester top notes — will gradually soften over time. Enjoy it within a year of opening for the full effect.

What food works well with this rum?

Jerk pork or chicken is the obvious answer, and it is obvious for good reason. The smoke and spice of proper Jamaican jerk mirror the rum's own roasted, complex character. Dark chocolate also works very well. If you are pairing at the table rather than at the pit, braised oxtail or any slow-cooked, richly seasoned meat will hold its own alongside it.

OUR GROWERS

Kingsyaad

Kingsyaad is a small, artisan Jamaican rum producer committed to making spirit without compromise: no added sugars, no artificial flavouring, and a production process rooted in the island's long tradition of high-ester, pot-still rum-making. Their philosophy is straightforwardly about letting the raw material speak — the wild yeasts, the tropical climate, and the patience of long fermentation do the heavy lifting. Beyond that, the producer keeps a low profile, which is rather refreshing.
