"A new acquisition by proprietor Jonathan Maltus, who sold Grand Destieu in order to upgrade to this terroir, this 10-acre vineyard is planted with 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc. It is situated near several of the premier grand cru classes of St.-Émilion, including both Beausejours and Angelus."
Robert M. Parker, Jr.
Vieux Château Mazerat is surrounded by Château Canon on three sides and by Château Angelus on the west; stuck in the middle of ‘Cru Classé’ territory and it faces Château Beausejour Duffau Lagarosse.
The vineyard is a mixture of very old Cabernet Franc vines and Merlot on clay over limestone.
What the critics say:
"The 2021 Mazerat is every bit as delicious as it was from barrel. Succulent dark cherry, plum, licorice, mocha, chocolate, spice and leather are nicely amplified. Soft and juicy, with no hard edges and fine balance, the 2021 is terrific. Like all the wines here in this vintage, Mazerat is a bit lighter. Personally, it's a style I like a lot. In 2021, Mazerat has a new name (it was formerly Vieux Chateau Mazerat), and includes fruit from Le Carre, which was not bottled separately because of issues with frost."
"The 2021 Vieux Château Mazerat comes from vines around the new château, just beside Angélus, and is based on 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. It brings good richness and depth on the palate, with spicy, chocolate, and subtle oak as well as red and black fruits. It's beautifully done and is going to have 15+ years of prime drinking."
