Rubicon is the wine that changed the conversation about California. When the first Rubicon was bottled in the 1980s from the historic Rutherford estate, a statement was made: Napa could produce something built for decades, not just dinner.
The wine is a Cabernet-dominant Bordeaux blend grown on the benchland soils of the Rutherford appellation, where the volcanic and alluvial ground gives structure and the afternoon shade off the Mayacamas slows ripening just enough to keep things interesting.

Aromas of black fruit, blueberries, black cherries and cocoa, then deep and broad flavors of black cherries, black olives, black currants and creme de cassis. Velvety, mouth-filling tannins perfectly balanced the bold fruit flavors. Made from a lower than usual percentage of cabernet sauvignon at 78%, with 11% merlot, 6% cabernet franc and 5% petit verdot. "Inglenook’s Rubicon is a very pretty, elegant wine in 2023, marked by a lovely freshness that weaves bay laurel and sage through cherry and blackberry fruit, graphite nuances, and perfumed red and white rose notes. It is lifted and expressive from the outset. On the palate, it builds with a soft, supple character defined by ultra-fine cocoa-powder tannins so characteristic of Rutherford. There is immense elegance here, along with purity of fruit and juicy acid tension, while a gentle swell of tannin gathers on the finish. One of the best Rubicons I’ve tasted in some time."
The Inglenook estate sits on the Rutherford Bench, a strip of benchland on the west side of Napa Valley where alluvial fans from the Mayacamas Mountains deposit well-drained, gravelly loam and volcanic soils over rocky subsoil. This combination of excellent drainage and relatively low fertility pushes vines to dig deep and produce concentrated, structured fruit without excess ripeness. The Rutherford climate is warmer than Oakville to the south but benefits from afternoon shade from the mountains, giving longer hang time and better acid retention. The result is the earthy, dusty character wine lovers call 'Rutherford dust' — a dry, mineral grip on the mid-palate that no amount of winemaking can manufacture.
Rutherford is one of Napa Valley's most respected sub-appellations, occupying the central valley floor and benchland around the town of the same name. It is Cabernet Sauvignon country above all else, producing wines with a distinctive earthy, dusty grip on the mid-palate that sets them apart from the more opulent fruit of Oakville or the power of Calistoga. The alluvial benchland soils and moderating mountain influence give Rutherford wines their structural backbone, making them among the most age-worthy in California. The appellation carries no minimum ageing requirements, but the best estates here have always made wines that reward patience.
After the drought years that dominated much of the early 2020s, 2023 brought Napa something it had almost forgotten: a genuinely wet winter. Atmospheric rivers dumped substantial rainfall across California through the early months, replenishing reservoirs and pushing water tables up in ways the valley hadn't seen for years. The growing season that followed was cooler and more drawn out than recent vintages, with harvest arriving later than many growers had become accustomed to. That extra hang time matters — it tends to produce phenolic ripeness without the sugar accumulation that forces winemakers into picking decisions they'd rather not make.
The result across Napa is a vintage that feels more detailed and less obviously plush than the blockbuster heat years. Cabernet Sauvignon shows real structure — tannins that have something to say — alongside fruit that doesn't overwhelm the conversation. These are wines built for the medium to long term. The best examples from Oakville, Rutherford, and Stags Leap will reward patience; give the serious reds until at least 2028, and the top names considerably longer. If you're reaching for bottles now, give them air and time in the glass.
