Predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with small amounts of other Bordeaux varietals, the aim of the Rubicon is, and always has been, to produce a wine capable of rivalling the best of Bordeaux, though with its own sense of place and tradition. Named after the river which was crossed by Julius Caesar in 49 B.C., Rubicon is produced from only the best plots across the estate.
Since 2016 the winemaking has been under the watchful eye of Philippe Bascaules who has taken the estate to whole new heights. Philippe cut his teeth right out of university with a job at one Château Margaux, eventually making his way up to Estate Director. This wealth of knowledge and prowess has been carefully implemented at Inglenook and the results are simply stunning.
What the critics say:
"Inglenook’s iconic red blend, Rubicon, combines 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Merlot, sourced primarily from their Rutherford Bench estate parcels. Aged in 100% new French oak, the 2022 vintage is a savoury, deeply structured wine. Layers of dusty mineral, damp forest floor, chanterelles, and cherry wood oak define the aromatics, leading to a medium- to full-bodied palate with driving energy and tension. Velvety tannins extend the wine’s depth, evolving into a fuller-bodied expression nuanced by a deep iron-like minerality, loamy earth, and pops of sage, thyme, and graphite. The finish is long and refreshing, with a firm yet balanced grip, making this an exceptionally structured and compelling expression of Rutherford terroir."
"Medium intensity ruby red, one of the standouts of the lineup. Full dark berry and mint leaf Cabernet character, generous, juicy, with energy and forward motion. This delivers campfire, liquorice, cocoa bean and incense without missing a beat. A warm vintage, so the challenge was being ready to pick and to avoid dehydration, meaning a touch of irrigation at the end of August, and to compensate during winemaking by soft extractions, 75% new French oak for ageing. New winery, built into a knoll within the property, opened for this 2022 vintage, with over 100 stainless steel vats. Harvest September 1 through to the end of the month. Director of winemaking Philippe Bascaules, Todd Devincenzi winemaker."
