Aged in French oak, the Hickinbotham Brooks Road Shiraz has the depth and poise to age gracefully, but it’s already showing plenty of charm in its youth. It’s the kind of wine that can do serious food pairings—think chargrilled lamb or a slow-cooked stew—but also stands confidently on its own. Stylish and grounded, this is Shiraz with a real sense of place.

First planted back in 1971, Hickinbotham Vineyard sits high in the hills of Clarendon, at the northern tip of McLaren Vale—a cooler pocket that brings freshness and finesse to the fruit. Originally dry-farmed to Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, the site has long been a go-to for some of Australia’s top names, supplying grapes for iconic wines for decades.

In 2012 Hickinbotham began bottling under its own name. Under the guidance of winemakers Christopher Carpenter and Peter Fraser, along with viticulturist Michael Lane, the estate has gone from quiet legend to a benchmark for McLaren Vale elegance.

What the critics say:

95/100James Suckling

"An excellent example of warm-climate shiraz, full-weighted and plush, yet it manages to come across as fresh, poised and eminently drinkable all at once. Not an easy feat. Hand-picked and extracted gently, with the cap kept wet across a three-week period on skins. Matured in oak (30% new) for eight months before blending and then transferred to an old 25L foudre and a concrete egg for a further 10 months. Raspberry coulis, clove, star anise and black plum. The tannins, impeccably managed, as is the wont here, with a fine line of savory chew. The freshness, bright and salty. Excellent wine. Drink or hold. Screw cap."

93/100Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate

"The 2021 Brooks Road Shiraz is incredibly perfumed, with field flowers, herbal tea, graphite, pencil box, spiced blood plum, aniseed, clove and Peking sauce. In the mouth, the wine is medium weight and dark, dark, dark, littered with exotic black things. A nighttime wine. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap."
