Henschke's 2016 Keyneton Estate Euphonium is a pitch-perfect harmony of power, poise, and pedigree—an effortlessly composed red blend that strikes just the right chord between Barossa boldness and Eden Valley elegance.
Named after the brass band once led by Henschke ancestor Paul Gotthard Henschke in the 1800s (hence the “Euphonium”), this wine is a reflection of both the family's deep local roots and their flair for crafting layered, expressive wines with a real sense of place. The 2016 vintage—warm, balanced, and generous—has produced a beautifully structured blend of Shiraz with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, sourced from the family’s historic Keyneton and Eden Valley vineyards.
In the glass, it’s a feast of dark plum, blackberry, and blackcurrant, laced with savoury spice, cedar, and a gentle earthiness. There’s polish here, but also depth and drive—silky tannins, a thread of bright acidity, and a long, composed finish that makes it a joy to drink now or lay down for years to come.
At Honest Grapes, we love wines that tell a story, and this one sings—six generations of winemaking, a rich musical heritage, and a deep respect for land and legacy, all bottled up in a wine that’s as enjoyable as it is collectable.
What the critics say:
"Matured in French and American hogsheads (18% new) for 18 months. The bouquet does indeed bellow from the glass like that a euphonium. It has a swag of red, black and purple fruits all in tune, something very different for drinking now."
"A sumptuous, savoury twist on classic Shiraz-Cabernet blends, full of rich, velvety cassis fruit, dark chocolate, cured black olive and dried herbs. Splashes of Merlot and Cabernet Franc bring accents of blueberry, spicy fruitcake, tea, tomato plant and ketchup. A fretwork of tannins and juicy acidity makes for a dynamic interplay of flavours and textures, concluding with Cabernet Sauvignon's gravel, grip and focus. A full-bodied, flavoursome feast."
"A blend of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the 2016 Keyneton Euphonium beautifully marries the mint and herb of the Bordeaux varieties with the plumminess and spice of the Shiraz. Hints of mint, tea and violets accent dark, plummy fruit, then finish with savory overtones of black olive. It's full-bodied and supple, ready to drink now or age 15 or more years."
