In 2023, Guillaume Tardy began the harvest on September 11, seizing the warm, dry window before rain arrived. This vintage also marked a new chapter for the estate, with Tardy introducing a gentle destemmer designed to preserve the integrity of each grape without breaking the skins, resulting in wines with refined perfumes and softer tannins. The 2023s show a shift toward elegance and suppleness, moving away from previous vintages' emphasis on power.
"The nose combines dense raspberry and gingerbread notes, leading to a ripe strawberry and raspberry palate. Tannins are soft, and the overall impression is dense, vibrant, and inviting. Aged in 35% new oak."
Our note
The grapes were picked at optimal ripeness with sugar levels between 12.5-13% and a pH of 3.4-3.5. Yields averaged 45-48 Hl/Ha, except for Échezeaux at 40 Hl/Ha. Bottling is expected in February. By contrast, 2024 yielded just 53 barrels (compared to 120 in 2023), as difficult growing conditions took a toll, although quality remains promising.
Optimal drinking window: 2027 - 2040
What the critics say:
"The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Champs Perrières Vieilles Vignes was less expressive on the nose than some of Tardy's other cuvées. It's a bit bashful and earthier at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with cranberry, redcurrant, black pepper and orange rind on the entry. It has decent weight, cohering toward the finish with a Morey-like, slightly ferrous aftertaste. This will be fascinating to revisit in bottle."
"This is aromatically both quite elegant and quite expressive with its nose of the pure essence of red currant, soft earth and just a suggestion of wood influence. There is again excellent intensity to the beautifully well-detailed and overtly mineral-driven medium weight flavors that display excellent length on the equally well-balanced and youthfully austere finale. This is a very good Gevrey villages of refinement that should age well too. Recommended. ♥ "Outstanding", "Top value""
