Based in the Southern Valleys in Marlborough, Fromm was established in the 90s, undergoing organic conversion in 2005, and has rapidly developed a cult reputation for its range of single vineyard reds & whites.
Winemaking is Burgundian, with little more than 3,000 cases produced annually. The vineyards are farmed by hand, grapes hand-picked, whilst in the winery they use wild yeasts, aging in Burgundian oak barrels, bottling with no fining or filtration and minimal sulphur. The resultant wines combine all the elegance, structure and suaveness of Burgundy yet with that signature plushness of NZ fruit, making them very attractive indeed.
"Cool and bright, showing zesty freshness upfront, with an underlying intensity that's both thirst-quenching and complex. Full of lemons and limes, a touch of grapefruit, freshly cut-grass, green bell pepper and elderflower all rolled-up together with some black current leaf and just a subtle hint of trademark Marlborough passionfruit. Very nicely balanced, a near-perfect blend of southern hemisphere sunshine and old world subtlety. Delicious."

This 2023 vintage is drinking beautifully now, with bright citrus and tropical fruit at their peak. Over the next 12 months, the wine will maintain its freshness while developing slightly more integration between the fruit and mineral elements. By 2027, it will still be pleasant but the vibrant aromatics that define great Sauvignon Blanc will begin to fade. This isn't a wine for long cellaring - drink it while the fruit is singing and the acidity is bright.
Food Pairings
In Marlborough, this style of Sauvignon Blanc is the perfect match for the region's abundant seafood: green-lipped mussels steamed with white wine and herbs, fresh paua (abalone) fritters, or simply grilled snapper with lemon and native herbs. The wine's herbaceous qualities also complement lamb dishes with rosemary and garlic, a New Zealand classic. Local chefs often pair it with goat's cheese from nearby Canterbury, the wine's acidity cutting through the richness while its citrus notes echo the cheese's tang.
We think this wine would go well with
Serve well-chilled at 8-10°C to preserve the wine's vibrant aromatics and crisp acidity. No decanting required - this wine is all about immediate freshness and primary fruit. Use a medium-sized white wine glass with a slightly tapered rim to concentrate the aromatics. Open and pour immediately; this style doesn't benefit from breathing time.
The Southern Valleys of Marlborough benefit from a slightly warmer, more sheltered microclimate than the famous Wairau Valley to the north. Fromm's vineyards are planted on river terraces with free-draining gravelly soils over clay, providing good water retention during dry periods. The combination of cool maritime influences and these warming valley floors creates ideal conditions for Sauvignon Blanc that balances intensity with elegance.
Marlborough is New Zealand's largest and most famous wine region, synonymous with Sauvignon Blanc since the 1980s. The region's cool climate, long sunshine hours, and free-draining soils create the perfect conditions for this variety's signature intensity and aromatics. While the Wairau Valley produces the most famous examples, sub-regions like the Southern Valleys where Fromm is based offer slightly different expressions with more shelter and warmth.
The 2023 vintage in Marlborough was shaped by a growing season that kept winemakers on their toes. A wet spring delayed flowering and reduced yields across the region, particularly for Sauvignon Blanc, while a warm, dry summer allowed for excellent ripening conditions. Harvest began earlier than usual, with many producers picking their Sauvignon Blanc in March under ideal conditions—clear skies and cool nights that preserved the variety's trademark freshness and aromatic intensity.
What emerged from the cellars is a vintage of real character and focus. The lower yields concentrated flavours beautifully, producing Sauvignon Blancs with more weight and texture than we've seen in recent years, whilst maintaining that laser-sharp acidity Marlborough does so well. Pinot Noir fared particularly well, benefiting from the extended hang time and producing wines with genuine depth and silky tannins. These wines are drinking brilliantly now—the Sauvignon Blancs are at their peak expression, whilst the Pinot Noirs will reward cellaring for another three to five years.
