Fonseca's 2024 vintage Port represents one of the great declarations from this legendary Douro house. From vineyards perched on the terraced slopes of the Cima Corgo and Douro Superior, this is a blend of the region's finest indigenous varieties, aged in massive oak vats and destined for decades of cellar evolution.
This vintage is built like a fortress - concentrated, powerful, and unyielding in its youth. The 2024 promises to follow Fonseca's tradition of wines that reward extraordinary patience, developing layer upon layer of complexity as Christmas cake richness gives way to leather, tobacco, and dried fruit elegance. Best cellared until the 2040s, though it will drink magnificently until 2080.

Fonseca's vineyards span the schist slopes of Quinta do Cruzeiro, Quinta do Santo António, and Quinta do Panascal in the Douro's premium sub-regions. The ancient schist soils retain heat during the day and release it slowly at night, while altitude and river exposure create dramatic diurnal temperature swings. These conditions stress the vines perfectly, concentrating flavours while preserving the acidity essential for decades of aging.
Porto DOC represents the pinnacle of Portuguese fortified wine production, with strict regulations governing grape varieties, yields, and production methods. Only wines from the demarcated Douro region may be called Port, and vintage declarations require exceptional quality across multiple quintas. The classification system distinguishes between vintage, late bottled vintage, tawny, and other styles, with vintage Port representing less than 2% of total production.
The 2024 vintage in the Douro arrived with drama befitting one of Europe's most theatrical wine regions. A sodden spring gave way to scorching summer heat that had producers reaching for their widest-brimmed hats, followed by perfectly timed September rains that saved what could have been a punishingly concentrated harvest. The result was fruit with proper ripeness but crucially retained acidity — a combination that had winemakers grinning as they tasted from tank.
What emerged was a vintage of surprising freshness given the summer heat, with Touriga Nacional showing particular poise and Tinta Roriz delivering structure without the sometimes brutal tannins of truly baked years. We find the wines vibrant rather than jammy, with enough backbone to age gracefully but approachable charm that makes them drinking beautifully now. The reds will reward patience until 2035, though frankly we'd struggle not to open a bottle or two while waiting.
