The Zuccardis keep pushing Mendoza Malbec into new territory. This San Pablo bottling comes from their high-altitude estate in the Uco Valley, where the Aluvional name refers to the ancient river stones that define the terroir. It's Malbec with serious intent rather than easy charm.
The 2022 shows exactly what happens when you combine old vines, careful selection, and those mineral-rich alluvial soils. Dense without being heavy, structured without losing the variety's natural generosity.
San Pablo sits at 1,200 metres above sea level in the Uco Valley, where ancient alluvial deposits from the Andes create a complex mix of stones, sand, and clay. These well-drained soils force the vines to dig deep, while the high altitude provides intense sunlight tempered by cool nights. The dramatic diurnal temperature variation preserves acidity and allows for extended hang time, concentrating flavours whilst maintaining freshness.
Mendoza is Argentina's wine heartland, producing over 60% of the country's wine from vineyards stretching across diverse altitudes and microclimates. The Uco Valley subregion has emerged as the premium zone, with its high-altitude sites delivering more structured, age-worthy wines than the traditional lower-altitude areas. Unlike European appellations, Mendoza's regulations focus more on geographical boundaries than prescriptive winemaking rules, allowing producers freedom to express their terroir.
The 2022 growing season in Mendoza delivered exactly what the region's winemakers pray for: a long, steady ripening period without the dramatic weather swings that can make or break a vintage. After a relatively cool summer, harvest stretched well into April for many producers, giving grapes the luxury of time to develop flavour whilst retaining the natural acidity that keeps Mendoza's reds from becoming jammy fruit bombs. We find this patience shows in the wines themselves, which carry more tension and less obvious power than some of the region's blockbuster years.
What emerged from the cellars feels like Mendoza at its most refined rather than its most muscular. The Malbecs show deep colour and concentrated dark fruit, but there's a freshness running through them that makes them approachable young whilst promising excellent ageing potential. Cabernet Sauvignon particularly shines, with structured tannins that feel polished rather than austere, and the high-altitude Chardonnays display crystalline precision. Most 2022s are drinking beautifully now and should develop gracefully until 2035, though the best Malbecs will reward patience well beyond that.
What the critics say:
"This has a lovely nose of dark fruit, ink, wet chalk, dried flowers, sage and hibiscus with a very attractive and unique lemony note. The palate is delicate, nuanced and very subtle, with precise dark fruit and focused tannins. This comes from a vineyard planted at 1,400 meters altitude. Aged exclusively in concrete. This is already a joy to drink, but will improve with some bottle age. Drink now or hold."
