Optimal drinking window: 2026 - 2028
LaMura Nero d'Avola is an easygoing red, made from organically grown grapes on sun-drenched Sicilian vineyards. Bursting with juicy red berry flavours, it’s smooth, fruit-forward, and incredibly easy to drink—perfect for a plate of pasta, grilled lamb chops, or even on its own.
The grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed, and gently crushed before fermentation with selected yeasts. Aged entirely in stainless steel, with no oak influence, it keeps its vibrant, ripe fruit character intact.
Affordable, fresh, and totally unpretentious, it’s a great go-to bottle for any occasion. If you’re sipping it in summer? Try it slightly chilled!
This wine is all about immediate pleasure and won't improve significantly with age. The bright fruit is at its peak now and will remain vibrant for another couple of years before starting to fade. The tannins are already integrated, and there's no structure built for long-term development. Drink it while that juicy character is still singing.
What the critics say:
"The 2022 Lamura Nero d’Avola is similarly uncomplicated. From Trento-based Casa Girelli’s Sicilian vineyards, it’s made from organically grown fruit which undergoes malolactic fermentation and sees no oak, thus retaining the vibrant innate freshness of Nero d’Avola. Succulent and plummy, with a hint of something savoury, it’s charmingly gluggable."
Tasting Notes
AppearanceBright ruby red with a youthful purple edge.
NoseImmediate red berry charm—strawberry and cherry with a deeper plum undertone. There's a whisper of Mediterranean herbs and warm spice that adds just enough complexity without overwhelming the fruit. Clean and inviting, with that sun-soaked generosity Sicily does so well.
PalateSmooth and fruit-forward with juicy red berries leading the charge, backed by riper plum flavours that give it satisfying weight. The texture is supple and easy, with soft tannins that never get in the way. A hint of savoury spice appears mid-palate, adding just enough interest to keep you coming back.
FinishClean and fresh with lingering berry fruit and a touch of warmth.
Overall impressionPure drinkability—this is Sicilian sunshine in a glass, uncomplicated and utterly charming.
Food Pairings
In Sicily, this would appear alongside pasta alla norma with its rich tomato and aubergine sauce, the wine's fruit complementing the vegetables' earthiness. Locals might pair it with grilled lamb seasoned with wild herbs, or with aged pecorino and crusty bread as an evening aperitivo. The wine's smooth character makes it perfect with arancini or caponata, where its gentle tannins won't fight the bold flavours. Even simple grilled swordfish with lemon and oregano would work beautifully.
We think this wine would go well with
Serve at 14-16°C, slightly cooler than most reds, which brings out its fresh fruit character. No need to decant unless you want to show off. A standard red wine glass works perfectly, though nothing too large that might dissipate the delicate aromas. In summer, don't be afraid to chill it further.
The vineyards benefit from Sicily's intense Mediterranean sun and dry climate, which concentrates the fruit while maintaining natural acidity. The volcanic soils retain enough moisture to keep the vines healthy through the long, hot summers. This combination of heat and mineral-rich earth gives Nero d'Avola its characteristic plump fruit and savoury undertones.
Sicily DOC allows winemakers enormous freedom to express the island's diverse microclimates and native varieties. Unlike the rigid rules of northern Italy, Sicilian producers can focus on capturing the Mediterranean character that makes their wines so distinctive. The designation guarantees origin while encouraging innovation and accessibility.
Sicily's 2022 vintage arrived with a fascinating contradiction: drought conditions that would normally spell disaster, yet somehow produced wines of remarkable freshness and precision. The island's volcanic soils and high-altitude vineyards proved their worth, retaining just enough moisture to keep vines healthy whilst concentrating flavours beautifully. Harvest came early across most zones, with growers picking under crisp morning skies before the heat built up.
What emerged from the cellars has surprised us all. The Nero d'Avola shows a taut, mineral backbone we rarely see from this variety, whilst Etna's Nerello Mascalese has that perfect balance of red fruit brightness and smoky volcanic grip that makes the variety so compelling. These aren't wines that need years in the cellar to find their voice - they're singing now, with enough structure to reward patience if you fancy laying some down until 2030 or beyond.
