Optimal drinking window: 2026 - 2029
Philippe and Sylvain Ravier craft this pure expression of Altesse from their Savoie vineyards, where Alpine slopes and limestone soils give the grape its characteristic mineral backbone. We think this 2024 shows exactly why Altesse deserves more attention beyond its mountain home.
The wine balances fresh orchard fruit with that distinctive Alpine clarity, offering immediate pleasure while retaining enough structure to develop over a few years.
This 2024 is showing beautifully now with fresh primary fruit at the fore and mineral tension providing structure. Over the next year, we expect the fruit to integrate further while developing subtle honey and almond notes that are characteristic of mature Altesse. The wine should reach its peak around 2027-2028, when the Alpine minerality will be perfectly balanced with developed fruit character. Beyond 2029, the bright acidity may start to soften though the wine will remain pleasant for several more years.
Tasting Notes
AppearancePale gold with brilliant clarity and a hint of green at the rim.
NoseFresh pear and white peach mingle with acacia flowers and a distinctive mineral lift. There's a subtle herbal quality that speaks to the Alpine origins, plus a touch of honey that suggests the grape's natural richness.
PalateMedium-bodied with vibrant acidity that carries flavours of crisp apple and ripe pear. The mineral spine runs through the middle, balanced by gentle texture and a hint of almond on the mid-palate. Clean and precise without being austere.
FinishLong and mineral-driven with echoes of white flowers and a subtle saline quality.
Overall impressionA pure expression of Altesse that captures both the grape's natural elegance and its Alpine character.
Food Pairings
In Savoie, this would traditionally accompany the region's famous mountain cheeses like Reblochon or Beaufort, where the wine's acidity cuts through rich, nutty flavours. Local fish from Alpine lakes, particularly perch or trout prepared simply with herbs, make perfect partners. The wine also shines with tartiflette or fondue, where its mineral backbone provides welcome contrast to the indulgent dairy richness that defines Savoyard cuisine.
We think this wine would go well with
Serve well-chilled at 8-10°C in medium-sized white wine glasses that will concentrate the delicate aromatics. No need to decant, though allowing it to warm slightly in the glass will reveal more of the wine's subtle complexity.
The vineyards benefit from Savoie's limestone-rich soils and dramatic diurnal temperature variation created by the Alpine setting. Cool nights preserve acidity while sunny days ensure proper ripening, creating the tension that makes Altesse so distinctive. The altitude and mineral-rich soils contribute to the wine's characteristic precision and length.
Savoie produces some of France's most distinctive white wines from indigenous varieties like Altesse, which thrives in the region's mountainous terrain. The appellation covers scattered vineyard sites across the French Alps, where limestone soils and continental climate create ideal conditions for crisp, mineral-driven whites. Unlike the broader Vin de Savoie designation, wines labelled simply 'Savoie' often come from the region's most established sites.
The 2024 vintage in the Rhône arrived after a growing season that kept everyone guessing. Spring brought its share of rain, which replenished soils after previous dry years, but summer turned properly hot with several intense spells that had growers scrambling to protect their fruit. The saving grace came from cool nights that preserved acidity, and crucially, harvest conditions stayed dry and stable when it mattered most. Syrah and Grenache both ripened well, though yields varied considerably depending on how effectively each domaine managed the heat stress.
What emerged from the cellars shows all the hallmarks of a warm vintage done right: the reds have immediate appeal with ripe, fleshy fruit and supple tannins, whilst the whites display surprising freshness alongside their generous stone fruit flavours. Northern Rhône Syrah has produced wines with real depth and concentration, and we're particularly impressed by how the southern blends have retained their characteristic garrigue perfume despite the challenging conditions. Most 2024 reds are drinking beautifully now and will continue to develop until 2032, making this a vintage that rewards both early drinking and patient cellaring.
