Optimal drinking window: Now - 2028
This 100% Gewürztraminer comes from old vines, around 50 years of age, farmed organically and biodynamically.
In the glass, it shows a bright golden hue, with lifted aromas of rose petals, lychee and exotic fruits like pickled mango. The palate balances a touch of residual sweetness with fresh acidity, giving it a juicy, off-dry feel and a surprisingly long, clean finish.
It’s a very flexible food wine — great with gently spiced Asian dishes like Thai curry or Vietnamese cooking, but equally good with glazed pork belly or smoked salmon. The combination of aromatics and subtle sweetness makes it especially suited to dishes with a hint of spice or sweetness.
Currently showing beautiful primary fruit and floral aromatics that will remain prominent for the next 2-3 years. By 2026, we expect the exotic fruit to integrate with developing honeyed richness and more pronounced mineral complexity. The wine should reach its peak drinking window around 2027-2028, when primary and secondary flavours achieve perfect balance. After that, the vibrant acidity will begin to soften and the wine may start showing petrol notes typical of aged Gewürztraminer, though it will remain pleasant for several more years.
Tasting Notes
AppearanceBright golden yellow with good clarity and brilliance.
NoseLifted aromas of rose petals and Turkish delight dominate initially. Fresh lychee and exotic pickled mango follow, with subtle spice notes emerging as the wine opens. There's a floral elegance that keeps the intensity in check.
PalateOff-dry entry with gentle residual sweetness immediately balanced by fresh acidity. The exotic fruit flavours carry through beautifully, with that pickled mango character adding intrigue. The texture is juicy and appealing without being cloying.
FinishSurprisingly long and clean, with the acidity lifting the fruit and leaving a fresh, spicy conclusion.
Overall impressionA well-balanced Gewürztraminer that shows both varietal character and genuine finesse.
Food Pairings
In Alsace, this would pair naturally with the region's Germanic-influenced cuisine—think choucroute garnie with its mix of sauerkraut, sausages, and pork, where the wine's sweetness balances the dish's saltiness and richness. Local Munster cheese, with its pungent aroma and creamy texture, makes a classic match, as does tarte flambée with its caramelised onions and bacon. During foie gras season, Gewürztraminer's richness and spice complement the luxury perfectly, while traditional Alsatian spiced breads and Christmas markets showcase how well the wine handles warming spices.
We think this wine would go well with
Serve well-chilled at 8-10°C to balance the wine's natural richness and allow the aromatics to shine without becoming overwhelming. No decanting required—this wine shows beautifully straight from the bottle. Use a medium-sized white wine glass that concentrates the aromatics while providing enough room for swirling. The wine will warm gradually in the glass, revealing different aromatic layers as it reaches cellar temperature.
The Katz vineyard sits on limestone-rich soils with clay subsoil in the sheltered Katzenthal valley. The combination of calcareous stone and clay provides excellent drainage while retaining enough moisture for the old vines to develop concentrated, mineral-driven fruit. The valley's microclimate protects against harsh winds while allowing for slow, even ripening.
Alsace AOC permits varietal wines from thirteen permitted grapes, with Gewürztraminer being one of the four 'noble' varieties. The appellation covers the entire Alsatian wine region along the Vosges foothills, where the rain shadow effect creates one of France's driest wine climates. Unlike most French wines, Alsace labels emphasise grape variety over geography, though individual vineyards and producers create distinct expressions within each variety.
The 2024 vintage in Alsace delivered exactly what vignerons hoped for after a string of challenging years. Spring arrived gently without late frosts, summer brought enough warmth to ripen everything properly, and crucially, September stayed dry when it mattered most. We find ourselves with one of those vintages that reminds you why Alsace sits where it does, tucked against the Vosges mountains with just enough protection to let the grapes ripen slowly and completely.
What landed in the cellars shows remarkable purity and balance across the board. The Rieslings have that crystalline precision we love, with acidity that cuts like a laser but never shouts about it. Gewürztraminer managed to be expressive without turning into perfume, while Pinot Gris struck that perfect middle ground between richness and freshness that makes you reach for another glass. These wines are drinking beautifully now if you fancy them young and bright, but the best will reward patience until 2030 and beyond.
