Optimal drinking window: Now - 2029
A serious white Châteauneuf from one of the appellation’s benchmark estates. This blend of Grenache Blanc, Clairette and Roussanne comes from sandy and clay parcels in La Crau and La Janasse. Fermentation and ageing are split between vat, foudre and French oak, building texture and quiet complexity while preserving freshness. It’s a structured, age-worthy style of southern Rhône Blanc.
2017 was warm and low-yielding, requiring careful selection. The result is a concentrated yet balanced wine, with slightly higher Clairette in the blend adding lift and definition.
Founded in 1973 and now run by Christophe and Isabelle Sabon, Domaine de la Janasse farms around 90 hectares and is widely regarded as one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s leading producers.
What the critics say:
"A blend of 40% Grenache Blanc, 30% Clairette and 30% Roussanne, the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc was bottled just a month before my visit. The Clairette and Roussanne mature in demi-muids, which gives this wine a round, expansive mouthfeel and rich texture. The ripe tangerine flavors gain focus on the long finish, picking up hints of citrus zest and brine, leaving behind a mouthwatering lasting sensation of freshness."
